Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of the RWU Center for Economic and Environmental Development (CEED), and under the direct supervision of the Assistant Professor of Biology (head of the Aquaculture Education, Research Innovations, and Extension [AERIE] Program), the Aquaculture Field Operations Manager is responsible for organizing and managing activities related to the nursery and field culture of different aquatic species (mainly shellfish). This position will work with the Shellfish Hatchery and the Aquaculture Field Research team. In addition, the Aquaculture Field Operations Manager will assist in other tasks associated with research and extension activities within CEED. This is a full-time position.

Aquaculture Farm and Nursery

* Manage, evaluate, and maintain conditions of RWU Aquaculture Farm (FerryCliffe) and Nursery.

* Coordinate and fulfill events and orders for RWU Aquaculture Farm and Nursery.

* Assist RWU Hatchery as directed.

* Oversee the transfer and care of aquatic species from hatcheries to the field sites and RWU nursery, and farm.

* Research, plan, construct, and implement new changes to the aquaculture farm and nursery to meet the needs of the AERIE program (including events, donations, permit work, expansions, research projects, and equipment).

* Identify and address concerns, updates, and necessary changes for the Aquaculture Farm and Nursery (gear, ease of access, safety, etc.).

Field Operations

* Schedule, coordinate, and perform field sampling with research partners.

* Assist in the research, design, and planning of equipment for field activities of projects as directed.

* Assist in developing the AERIE program by helping in writing and preparing research grant proposals as directed.

* Identify and purchase equipment needed for field projects, RWU nursery, and farm.

* Record, input, and analyze data from research projects, keep records of activities and data, and assist in preparing reports as directed.

* Assist in managing, crewing, and captaining RWU boats for AERIE, CEED, and RWU activities (including field sampling, education, and university trips and tours).

* Schedule, coordinate, and perform field sampling with research partners.

Extension and Outreach

* Provide general information about the AERIE program to tours and other visitors to campus.

* Communicate with local farmers and agencies to provide help and information as directed.

* Assist in visiting/touring current and potential research partners (scouting locations and discussing their ability to be used in future/current AERIE activities).

* Assist in coordinating and conducting AERIE workshops, seminars, webinars, and courses (including the Applied Shellfish Farming Course) as directed.

Additional Duties

* Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervising of student researchers, summer interns, work-study students, and new staff technicians for the AERIE Program.

* Assist in ensuring proper techniques and protocols are in place to maintain a safe, productive, and efficient work environment.

* Assist with training and mentoring, when directed by faculty supervisor, to students in aspects of aquaculture farm, nursery, and field work.

* Assist in managing the AERIE website and social media outlets.

* Assist with other Center for Economic and Environmental Development (CEED) projects and activities as requested.

* This position might occasionally require working outside of regular working hours and/or during holidays and/or weekends.

* Maintain the highest level of confidentiality and use discretion when supporting students, their families, and when working with sensitive student information.

Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution.

* Minimum of two years of experience in aquaculture farm setting and/or fieldwork.

* Working knowledge of aquaculture and general aquaculture farm operations and fieldwork.

* Intermediate computer literacy including MS Office Suite software.

* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate to a variety of audiences including faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience in aquaculture in either commercial or research setting.

* Practical mechanical skills including plumbing and construction.

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
