Position Description

Organist and Music Director (Herein referred to as “the Music Director”)

To provide creative leadership of a music program that will encourage the musical gifts of the congregation and enhance worship through a variety of musical styles that is vital, attractive, and appropriate. This will include: (1) facilitating worship through the playing of the organ and/or piano (2) Directing the St. Andrew’s choir (3) Organizing and gathering support for Music at St. Andrew’s Concert Series.

Dimensions

May 1st through December 31st:

  • 9:30 a.m. Sunday: Rite II liturgy with hymns and organ/piano voluntary music
  • January 1st– April 30th
  • 8:00 a.m. Sunday: Rite II liturgy with hymns and organ/piano voluntary music
  • 10:30 a.m. Sunday: Rite II liturgy with choir anthems, congregational hymns and organ voluntaries

November 1st– April 30thProvide organ and choral music for the following additional services during the year:

  • One choir rehearsal each week with the St. Andrew’s Choir
  • Christmas Eve
  • Ash Wednesday
  • Maundy Thursday
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Eve/Great Vigil of Easter
  • Thanksgiving

Remuneration

  • Average 10-12 hours per week
  • 2 weeks paid vacation, not to conflict with major feasts
  • St. Andrew’s will make the appropriate FICA/Medicare/Workers Compensation contributions from which the Music Director may benefit as an employee.

Weddings & Funerals

The Music Director will provide music at all weddings requiring organ or piano music held within the church. The services of other organists may be used only with the permission of the Music Director.

Accountabilities

To achieve the Objective of this position, The Music Director:

  • Select voluntary music, hymns, and anthems (planning about three to six weeks ahead, so that adequate review and preparation may be achieved)
  • Recruit choir members
  • Conduct weekly choir rehearsals (Nov. - April). If, for unavoidable reasons, a choir rehearsal must be cancelled, The Music Director will first inform the Rector and then contact choir members prior to rehearsal time.
  • Maintain records of plans, choir membership, and music library. This work may also be achieved through the direction of volunteers.
  • Confer with the Rector and other parish leaders on a regular basis, for an average of one-half hour per week, so that they may work smoothly as a team. In a timely manner, the Music Director shares all concerns and ideas related to the position directly with the Rector or appropriate parish leaders.
  • Arrange for substitutes for the Music Director’s vacation (at parish expense) or for personal leave (at The Music Director’s expense) or for weddings and funerals at which The Music Director chooses not to serve (at fee-payer's expense).
  • Is responsible for the purchase of all necessary music and music supplies and the hiring of instrumental and vocal soloists. Expenditures in this area shall not exceed the amount provided in the church budget.
  • Is responsible for the upkeep of the church’s musical instruments (at the expense of the church; expenditures in this area shall not exceed the amount provided in the church budget).
  • Organizes and manages Music at St. Andrew’s Concert Series, 2-3 events per year.

St. Andrew’s shall:

  • Maintain a budget line in the annual budget for the purchase of new music and maintenance of instruments for the Choir and Music Director, amount to be determined in the annual budget preparation.
  • Provide the remuneration as in the section noted above.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $27,000.00 - $32,000.00 per year
