Saint Patrick Catholic School is Hiring a Special Education Teacher (2024-2025) Near Norfolk, VA

Job Title: Learning Resource Teacher 

Division/Status: Faculty / Exempt, Full-Time, 10 month Employee

Reports to: Special Education Teacher 

Effective: August 14, 2024

Overview

Saint Patrick Catholic School is seeking a dedicated and experienced Special Education Teacher as a learning resource to support our neurodiverse learners in grades K-8 beginning in August for the 2024-2025 academic year. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the Science of Reading and experience implementing evidence based strategies in 1:1 or small group settings.

Responsibilities

  • Individualized Instruction:
    • Provide targeted academic support to neurodiverse students in reading, writing, and executive functioning skills.
    • Develop and implement personalized learning plans based on students' individual needs and goals.
    • Build positive rapport with students in 1:1 and small group lessons.
  • Evidence-Based Interventions:
    • Utilize the Science of Reading and Orton techniques to deliver effective reading instruction and intervention.
    • Monitor students' progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed to ensure growth and success.
  • Collaboration and Consultation:
    • Collaborate with classroom Learning Resource Coordinator, teachers, parents, and other school staff to identify students' learning needs and develop appropriate interventions.
    • Provide consultation and support to teachers in implementing differentiated instruction and accommodations for neurodiverse learners.
  • Professional Development:
    • Stay current with research-based practices and strategies in the field of special education and literacy instruction.
    • Lead or participate in professional development opportunities for staff related to the Science of Reading, Orton techniques, and supporting neurodiverse learners.
  • Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Collect and analyze student data to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and make data-driven decisions.
    • Communicate progress and recommendations to parents, teachers, and school leadership on a regular basis.
  • Other Duties As Assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Reading Education, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Certification in Special Education or Reading Specialist.
  • Experience working with neurodiverse learners in grades K-8.
  • Training and expertise in the Science of Reading and Orton techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies and interventions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and school staff.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Preferred: Experience with curriculum development and adaptation for diverse learners. 
  • Preferred: Knowledge of assistive technology tools and resources.
  • Preferred: Certification in Orton-Gillingham or other structured literacy programs.

Physical Job Requirements

  • Sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Physical agility to lift up to 30 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height
  • Bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead
