SCPL is Hiring an Outreach Library Assistant: Position#2 Near Georgetown, KY

Under the direction of the Outreach Manager, the Outreach Library Assistant is responsible for providing access to the library’s materials and services in a friendly manner by performing a variety of circulation, reference, and clerical functions.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides information and circulation services to patrons in person and by phone using print and non-print resources.
  • Assists in driving the bookmobile and other library vehicles to various locations in Scott County as needed.
  • Assists in stocking shelves in the bookmobile with appropriate books and materials consistent with seasonal schedules and routes.
  • Assists in keeping library vehicles in good clean working condition.
  • Assists in developing programming and bookmobile stops.
  • Maintains and organizes outreach office and items for events.
  • Maintains weekly statistics.
  • Assists, hosts, and conducts outreach programs for audience of all ages.
  • Maintains Outreach services’ youth collection.
  • Attends community events performing outreach services for community members of all ages as assigned.
  • Gives presentations about library services and resources to audiences of all ages.
  • Provides back up to other outreach staff duties.
  • Attends all staff and department meetings as scheduled.
  • Works all Public Service Desks as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Expected Hours of Work:

Must work 20.0 hours a week to maintain part-time status. On-site attendance and some evenings and weekends are required.

Schedule is a 3-week rotation, hours this position will work are listed below. These hours are non-negotiable.

Week 1

  • Sunday 1:00p-5:00p
  • Tuesday 9:00a-1:00p
  • Wednesday 11:45a-8:15p
  • Thursday 9:00a-1:00p

Week 2

  • Sunday 1:00p-5:00p
  • Tuesday 9:00a-1:00p
  • Wednesday 11:45a-8:15p
  • Thursday 9:00a-1:00p

Week 3

  • Tuesday 9:00a-1:00p
  • Wednesday 11:45a-8:15p
  • Thursday 9:00a-1:00p
  • Saturday 9:00a-1:00p

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • General computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
  • Library experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving history.
  • Willing and able to speak effectively in public.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgement, and maintain professionalism in uncomfortable situations.
  • Ability to speak publicly to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to help older and/or limited mobility patrons onto the bookmobile.
  • Ability to organize, plan, set priories, use time effectively and to meet deadlines while working with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to do basic math for routine calculations.
  • Keeps abreast of and understands emerging technologies, current trends, and best practices for the department.
  • Ability to adapt, remain flexible, and flourish in a changing environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Ability to be tactful and respect confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing, including through email.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups of varying personalities and ages, and to serve the public courteously in a variety of situations.
  • Foster an environment that attracts and invites patrons to use the library.
  • Contributes to creating an environment oriented to trust, open communication, creative thinking, and cohesive team.
  • Proficiency in using MS Office applications; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Physical Demands

  • Moving 50-100 lbs. carts and handling moderately heavy boxes of books when the occasion requires.
  • Ability to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, type, pick, pinch, hear, and perform repetitive motions when the occasion requires.
  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time.
  • Movement through facility locations and assisting patrons.
  • Ability to handle books, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to reach above the head and below the knee to retrieve shelved items.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to identify materials on shelving up to 90” and to read primarily typed or printed text in a variety of type sizes.

Work Environment

  • Climate-controlled environment inside the building and inside the library vehicle and seasonal conditions outside the building
  • Limited access to restroom facilities when driving a library vehicle.
  • On the road 70-75% of work time.
