POSITION TITLE: Dean of Students (9th - 12th grades)

LOCATION: North Chicago Community High School

REPORTS TO: School Principal

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To assume responsibilities assigned by the principal for developing and implementing pupil instructional services within the school.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Certification

Required: Professional Educator License (Grade 9 through 12)

Required: General Administrative Endorsement

Education

Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Education

Preferred: Master's Degree Program in Education, Guidance, and Counseling or

Administration

Experience

Required: Minimum of three (3) years of classroom experience in secondary education

Preferred: Prior experience as a Dean of Students in a high school preferred

Preferred: Prior experience working at the high school level in an underserved community

Preferred: Prior experience with restorative justice practices and de-escalation techniques

Preferred: Knowledge of SB100

Preferred: Bilingual Spanish

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support to 9th-grade classroom teachers, students, and parents
  • Core member of the SEL Team, MTSS Team, Freshman Teacher Team, and Administrative Team
  • Assist staff with data analysis and implementation of the school’s strategic plan
  • Respond to parent complaints or concerns as assigned by the principal
  • Respond to staff regarding student issues as assigned by the principal
  • Respond to bus complaints or concerns, and maintain contact with Transportation Office as necessary
  • Process discipline referrals, including contacting parents – provide follow-up information via email or in-person to inform staff of resolution
  • Observes, supervises, and evaluates student behavior in non-classroom areas of the school, i.e., hallways, cafeterias, etc. Responsible for encouraging proper climate regarding student behavior
  • Monitor and maintain accurate records (e.g., student absenteeism, tardiness, detentions, ISS/OSS, teacher referrals)
  • Analyzes and reports on monthly data trends across the 9th grade
  • Reviews attendance records to identify problems and truancies. The Dean counsels students, parents, and other administrators to identify and understand attendance problems to determine satisfactory solutions.
  • Provide consultation with staff as necessary to address student behavioral issues and develop individual student plans for behavior improvement
  • Consult with the faculty to assist in the improvement of their classroom management skills
  • Coordinate with office staff and classroom teachers the scheduling of parent/teacher conferences
  • Coordinate with administration, office staff, and classroom teachers the scheduling and promotion of building activities and events
  • Provide classroom instruction support as needed
  • Assists in the supervision of the school campus
  • Assists in student control at various evening and weekend school-related events

Monitors disciplinary procedures to ensure they comply with the Illinois School Code

  • Consults with the faculty to assist in the improvement of their classroom management skills
  • Provides recommendations to the Principal and assists in the development of SEL systems and structures
  • Performs other such tasks as may be assigned by the Principal

  • A working understanding of PBIS and how it enhances a positive school culture.
  • Demonstrated skill in organizing ideas and presenting them with clarity and conciseness, in establishing and maintaining working relationships based on mutual confidence and respect, in identifying problems and their resolutions, in the evaluation of performance potential as revealed through interviews and other means of observation, and in organizing and maintaining simultaneous progress in a considerable variety of detailed operations involving many different people and processes.
  • Knowledge of the scope and relationships of the position to the total educational program, and sufficient knowledge and understanding of functions related to the position to provide leadership in the maintenance and improvement of an efficient and effective program.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, social competency, adaptability, self confidence, emotional maturity, initiative, enthusiasm, and resourcefulness, as well as dedication to duty and the ability to act consistently and to evaluate a program through observation and examination of stated objectives and related results.
  • Assist teachers in their following required knowledge, skills and abilities:Planning and Preparation – Teachers are responsible for demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy, students, and resources. Design coherent instruction and select appropriate instructional activities, and has the ability to assess students' learning.
  • Classroom Environment – Teachers are responsible for creating an environment of respect and rapport, establishing a culture for learning, managing classroom procedures, managing student’s behavior, and has the ability to organize physical space.Instruction – Teachers must communicate clearly and accurately, use questioning and discussion techniques, engage students in learning, provide feedback to students, and demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness.Professional Responsibility – Teachers must reflect on teaching, must maintain accurate records, communicate professionally, contribute to the school and district, grow and develop professionally, and show professionalism.

Technical:

Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office. Must be knowledgeable in all instructional

technology tools as required of staff.

Interpersonal: Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents and staff. Must exhibit sound judgment in dealing with people. Must have strong organizational skills. Must be able to make difficult decisions and support others. Must be able to work harmoniously with students, parents, staff and administration.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-Time, 213 day position.

SALARY RANGE: $70,000 - $90,000 (Commensurate with education and experience ) benefits

EVALUATION: Conducted yearly
