HAWAII GAS is Hiring a Legal and Risk Specialist Near Honolulu, HI

Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

The Legal and Risk Specialist will assist attorney(s) by providing clerical and research support services including document preparation and review; interviewing clients and witnesses; research, investigations, and fact checking; and trial/ hearing preparation, and assist the Director of Risk with the Company’s security and compliance program.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Primary job duties to include regulatory docket management for dockets before the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission (PUC). [Approx. 25%]
    • Regulatory docket management includes tracking of filings and deadlines, SME assignments and coordination for discovery, exhibit review and preparation, confidentiality markings/ log, and updating regular management reports regarding docket status.
    • Assists with the preparation and filing of regulatory reports and other filings with the PUC.
  • Assists attorneys within the legal department, including but not limited to: [Approx. 50%]
    • Meets with attorneys, clients, and other professionals to discuss assigned cases or projects.
    • Drafts legal documents including routine pleadings and motions, affidavits, and interrogatories; files motions and pleadings according to judicial procedures.
    • Provide paralegal support including but not limited to:
      • Initial drafting.
      • Document review and production.
      • Legal research for litigation, real property, contracts, bankruptcy, compliance, and other legal matters.
    • Researches and analyzes statutes, regulations, legal articles, judicial decisions, and other legal sources; provides written analysis to attorneys.
    • Interviews clients and witnesses and prepares summaries of their statements.
    • Prepares, organizes, stores, and retrieves records and case files, which may include evidence, exhibits, depositions, pleadings, and other items.
    • Assists attorneys with trial/ hearing preparation, which may include attending trials and hearings.
  • Assists the Director of Risk with the Company’s security and compliance program, including but not limited to: [Approx. 25%]
    • Performs security and compliance risk assessments, inspections, and audits.
    • Develops, implements, and documents security policies and procedures.
    • Assists with internal investigations of security matters and/or inventory loss.
    • Maintains current knowledge of applicable government compliance regulations, which may include Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Complies with all Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Business Administration, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Experience with emphasis in industrial security, and regulated facilities.
  • Paralegal experience.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Paralegal certificate preferred.
  • Physical Security Professional (PSP) or Certified Protection Professional (CPP) or similar.
  • Certified Homeland Protection Professional (CHPP)

Communication/Competency/Skill Requirements:

  • Flexible and adaptable to changes within the position/department/company.
  • Able to steward themselves in a professional and courteous manner to promote a harmonious working environment.
  • Able to communicate professionally, courteously, and effectively utilizing standards means of communication within the workplace (i.e., verbal, written, e-mail, phone, text, etc.).
  • Understanding of legal language and principles, research methods, court pleadings and processes, and other related matters.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, and to exercise discretion and good judgment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Working Conditions/Environment:

  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
  • Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
  • Able to perform all physical duties entailed by the “Working Conditions/Physical Requirements” assessment.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
