Helen Y. Davis Leadership Academy Charter Public School the Academy is a standalone middle school that serves grades 6-8 in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston. The Academy embodies the traditions and values of an Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Our school values are founded in a belief that the most impactful way to close the achievement gap is through great teaching, high expectations for all students, and a curriculum that is rigorous and cultural-based, to reflect thestudents and families that we serve.
We believe that our students academic achievements are bolstered when provided the opportunity to participate in meaningful enrichment programming in the arts and athletics. The Academys core values are personal excellence, intellectual curiosity, integrity, compassion, respect, and community citizenship. Successful candidates possess a passion for teaching, a sense of urgency in closing the achievement gap, and an understanding of current and ongoing social and ethical dynamics as it pertains to populations of young people whose communities have historically been underserved and marginalized by the educational system. In addition to traditional teacher responsibilities, all teachers at the Academy are expected to adhere to an extended school day schedule, as well as extended school year calendar.Mission: Our mission is to develop high achieving students of good character who use problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills to inspire others and to catalyze educational, economic, andpolitical advancement within their communities and the broader nation.Reports to: PrincipalResponsibilities: - Provides skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students.- Medication administration.- Immunization surveillance and routine health screenings are conducted annually.- Routine emergency care is provided for students and staff.- Refer students to their primary health care provider for an evaluation if necessary.- Act as liaison for the school, home and outside medical facilities for students with complex medical needs.- Interprets medical data and provides a health plan for students individual education plans, as an education team member.- Promotes student wellness and assists in maintaining a healthy school environment.- Provides emergency medical care to students.- Administers and/or supervises the administration of prescription medication to students.- Counsels and/or educates students in small groups or as individuals concerning medical issues.- Conducts formal and informal evaluations of medical conditions and develops accurate medical summaries on students.- Teaches mini-courses to small groups of students in Medical/Health areas relating to survivalskills.- Monitors and assess compliance with immunization standards as per the Academy and Department of Health regulations.- Performs vision, hearing, scoliosis, dental, and other health related screening as required by Department of Health or the Academys health services.- Develops and maintains contacts with medical persons or facilities who might provide direct service or consultation.- Participates in the SST.- Participates in team meetings of students when medical input, interpretation, or consultation is needed.- Establishes and maintains appropriate record keeping and reporting formats and procedures.- Maintains a daily visitors log.- Conducts formal workshops and/or informal training for staff as appropriate.- Maintains adequate and updated health records.- Implement and supervise educational plans for students who are hospitalized and or returning from concussion/head injury.- Serves as medical representative to evaluations and re-evaluations, obtains and interprets medical evaluation at these meetings.Qualifications Required: 1.
Bachelors degree2. Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse.3. MA State Department of Education School Nurse License (All Levels)4. CPR and First Aid Certification5.
Ability to meet the Academy Standards of Effective Practice as outlined above.6. Experience working with children and adolescents in public school/agency/human services setting.7. Current authorization to work in the United States Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.Qualification Preferred: 1. Experience in support services in a school setting; liaison and case management; high risk, multi- problem children and adolescents.2.
