Position Title: Eureka! Camp Counselor (Summer)
Reports To: Head Counselor & Eureka! Coordinator
Employment period: July 8th 2024- August 2nd 2024 (Monday-Friday, not to exceed 40 hrs/wk) *Pre-employment training/CPR training (Date TBD) and pre-camp planning time (June 25th-July 5th) up to 20 hours) will be offered prior to these dates. Instructors will be compensated for this time.
Agency Description: Girls Incorporated is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Girls Inc. has provided quality programs for girls, young women, and families since 1937. Cutting-edge, innovative programs are provided in areas such as science and math education, sports & adventure, media literacy, leadership training, and pregnancy prevention. Our centers are located at 962 Albany Street, Schenectady & 80 Central Ave, Albany.
Program Description: Girls Inc. Eureka! is a free and unique five-year program that provides girls with a gentle introduction to STEM, personal development, sports, mentorship, and career exploration. Girls commit to the program for five years, preparing them for the next step in their education after high school. During the first two summers as a Eureka! member the girls participate in a four-week camp at UAlbany (main campus). The camp includes hands-on STEM, personal development, & sports (including swimming) activities.
Eureka! Camp Counselor Job Responsibilities:
· Supervise rising 8th & 9th grade Eureka! members during all activities & off-site field trips.
· Plan, facilitate and evaluate structured personal development &/or sports activities during the 4- week long summer program.
· Assist professors & UAlbany staff with STEM activities (as needed).
· Supervise girls on bus trips.
*Schedule/responsibilities will be shared with co-counselors
Qualifications and Skills Desired:
· High school degree required
· Experience working with youth in educational or recreational settings
· Keen understanding of gender issues affecting girls and young women and a commitment to girls centered programs.
· High level of cultural awareness
· Enthusiasm and excitement for working with girls of all ages
· Demonstrated ability to be professional, creative, innovative, and flexible
· Strong management, communication, and interpersonal skills
· Employment is contingent upon a clean background check
