Primary Duties:
· Set up or inspect equipment prior to operation.
· Create or maintain inclines or ramps.
· Maintain tools and equipment so that they are kept in good working order and are safe for use.
· Receive written or oral instructions regarding material movement or excavation
· Perform daily routine maintenance on machine including lubrication and monitor needed repairs/service requirements.
· Become familiar with digging plans, machine capabilities and limitations, and with efficient and safe digging procedures in a given application.
· Dig trenches to lay or repair storm, sewer, water, and other pipelines.
· Consistently monitor and maintain compliance with all safety policies, procedures and regulations
· Loading, delivery, and dumping of materials in a safe and timely manner.
· Other duties as required.
Job Skills and Experience Required:
· Working knowledge of operating a backhoe on a pipe crew.
· Ability to understand the limitation of the machines.
· Consistently monitor and maintain compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
· Observe hand signals, grade stakes, or other markings so that work can be performed to specifications.
· Knowledge reading locate markings and general understanding of underground and/or overhead utilities.
· Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings (plans/blueprints).
· Knowledgeable in OSHA standards for excavations.
· Effective communication skills (both listening and verbal).
· Understand slopes, cuts, and different soil types.
· Ability to multitask and prioritize.
· Time Management and organizational skills.
· Able to listen, follow directions, and have a willingness to continue to enhance skills
· Effective communications with jobsite supervisor and co-workers

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to communicate effectively with others. The employee must have dexterity of hands to perform the tasks required of this position and sight in order to be aware of hazards and dangers found in the nature of work. The employee will regularly stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time. Must be able to climb, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, grasp, and perform repetitive motions. Ability to maneuver in crawl spaces and utility tunnels and climb ladders of varying heights. Ability to lift moderate to heavy objects up to 100 lbs and more.
Lifting Requirements:
☒ Very heavy work – Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for heavy work.
