DESCRIPTION

This recruitment will fill positions at the Valley Recreation locations. Depending on experience, positions are available for either Recreation Leader or Recreation Aide. We have vacancies for positions that are 19 or less hours weekly/no benefits and positions up to 29 hours weekly that includes PERS, prorated sick and annual leave.

Recreation Aide: starting salary $12.69 per hour

Recreation Leader: starting salary $18.89 per hour

** While the incumbent will primarily perform the duties of the Recreation Leader or Aide within the Kid's Club and Summer Camp programs, all the Essential Functions related to the Recreation Leader or Aide position are required to be performed as needed.

DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for assisting with, leading and overseeing a variety of recreation and activity programs at assigned and/or designated recreation facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Recreation Aide:
  • Assists general public, customers and staff in person, over telephone and by email; answers inquiries and provides general direction related to recreation activities.
  • Assists with preparation and/or leadership of recreation programs and activities, including youth supervision. Leads games and craft activities and interacts with participants; monitors activities of children during recreational trips and/or tours.
  • Inspects facility to ensure youth safety; assists with clean-up of facilities and programs.
  • Prepares supplies and materials for programs and activities and prepares snacks; arranges chairs, tables, and sporting or exercise equipment in designated rooms or other areas for scheduled group activities; operates audiovisual equipment, as needed.
  • Participates in training opportunities and attends staff meetings.
  • Welcomes participants to program and greets parents when needed.
  • Receives, stores, and issues sports equipment and supplies.
  • Keeps attendance records or scores at events; monitors spectators and participants at special events to ensure orderly conduct.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Recreation Leader:
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and conduct of recreation programs and activities, including direct supervision and guidance of youth participants; prepares lesson plans and leads games and craft activities; works as primary contact at camps and during off-site trips.
  • Maintains records of programs and activities including, but not limited to, rosters, daily roll sheets/attendance records, time cards, and emergency contacts; ensures up-to-date and accurate contact list for parents and/or legal guardians and ensures that children are picked up in accordance with authorizations on file.
  • May receive funds at events; maintains accurate inventory of program supplies, games, crafts, etc.; participates in the shopping/ordering of supplies and snacks.
  • Inspects facility to ensure youth safety and maintains a clean and organized recreational area; cleans up spills and unsanitary conditions when they occur.
  • Prepares supplies and materials for programs and activities and prepares snacks; arranges chairs, tables, and sporting or exercise equipment in designated rooms or other areas for scheduled group activities; operates audiovisual equipment, as needed.
  • Coordinates activities of assigned staff; prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; coaches, instructs, and provides training to employees as necessary; prepares activity and snack schedules; participates in training opportunities and attends staff meetings.
  • Periodically drives children and other staff in a van for off-site activities; monitors trip petty cash and activities of youth during recreational trips or tours; disciplines youth participants according to established policies and procedures, as necessary.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience:

Must be at least 16 years old.


Recreation Aide:
Previous experience specifically working with children; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that could provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform job duties.

Recreation Leader: Two (2) years of experience in leading recreational activities; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:

  • Basic arithmetic.
  • Correct English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Basic record keeping practices.
  • Basic understanding of recreation activities.
  • Basic understanding of Child Development and child abuse recognition.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, often in situations which may be stressful.

Skill in:

  • Leading children in games and arts & craft activities.
  • Organizing creative recreational programs and preparing supplies.
  • Customer service.
  • Assembling pamphlets, reports, forms and other documents.
  • Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, and the public.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Driver's License. ( for Recreation Leader position)
  • First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
