Job Summary

This is highly skilled work responsible for the maintenance and repair of all County facilities. The incumbent assists in planning and scheduling work projects as well as supervising work in progress and acting as a lead worker. The incumbent performs skilled electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry repair work according to prioritized county building needs. Work includes performing heavy manual tasks and the safe operation of light and medium equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Making periodic inspections of County buildings for needed repairs and maintenance. Updating electrical systems to code
  • Reviewing project specifications and preparing material cost estimates; submitting to Superintendent
  • Receiving work orders and scheduling maintenance and repairs according to county priority needs
  • Supervising and instructing workers in various maintenance and repair projects
  • Repairing and remodeling county electrical systems; replacing worn electrical devices; wiring renovations; trouble-shooting wiring problems; routing computer cables
  • Performing plumbing repairs such as unclogging sinks and toilets, changing sinks and toilets, replacing valves and repairing busted water lines
  • Installing electrical systems in small county projects
  • Installing service entrances for temporary trailers
  • Performing repairs and adjustments to climate control systems; coordinating outside repairs as necessary
  • Performing carpentry work, framing new construction, hanging doors and windows; hanging dry wall, painting, repairing and replacing roofs, building cabinets, and bookshelves
  • Making repairs on windows and doors
  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools and light equipment such as drill presses, table saws, radial saws, hand tools, tractors, lawn mowers, pressure washers, buffing machines, et cetera
  • Making repair and additions to furniture; locating and relocating furniture, equipment, and files at Department request
  • May transport and supervise community service workers
  • Responding to after-hours and weekend maintenance and repairs requests
  • Performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development Certificate (GED)
  • Two years professional work experience
    • Minimum one year of which was performed in a supervisory capacity
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn county and department operations, ordinances, policies, procedures, terminology, and materials as they relate to assignment
  • Knowledge of building and construction principles, techniques, guidelines, practices, and equipment as related to assignment; electrical, plumbing, carpentry, construction,
  • Knowledge of basic business mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of all department equipment, tools, machinery, and vehicles as required by assignment
  • Knowledge of materials requirements used in department functionality and projects
  • Skill in effective inter-personal and public relations; excellent oral and written communication skills to satisfactorily resolve conflicts and issues, and to explain established policies and procedures to employees and the general public
  • Skill in estimating material costs
  • Skill in handling and operating all assigned equipment, tools, and/or vehicles in a safe and proficient manner
  • Skill in instructing, leading, and supervising employees and/or work crews
  • Skill in performing tasks which require attention to detail, and completing assigned jobs efficiently and correctly
  • Ability to apply common sense to understand, follow, and complete verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate and interact clearly and effectively with all those contacted in the course of work in a professional and courteous manner, both orally and in writing; establishing and maintaining effective, professional, and cordial working relationships
  • Ability to provide instruction and direction; effective leadership and supervisory skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend routine instructions, short correspondence and memos
  • Ability to resolve routine and non-routine problems and complaints by applying or adapting established policies and procedures
  • Ability and willingness to meet physical requirements and perform manual labor (including lifting and carrying heavy objects) indoors or outdoors for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of specific instructions or direct supervision
