Development Authority of the North Country is Hiring a MMF-EQUIPMENT OPERATOR CDL-A Near Rodman, NY

Job Summary: The MMF Equipment Operator CDL-A’s primary responsibility is for the safe and efficient operation of the tractor trailer/tanker unit utilized to haul leachate to offsite Publically Operated Treatment Works (POTWs. When leachate is not being hauled, the MMF Equipment Operator CDL-A performs a variety of specialized and skilled tasks and duties for the operation and light maintenance of landfill related equipment and facilities. The MMF Equipment Operator CDL-A complies with all policies, regulations and guidance as defined in the MMF Facility Manual, Operating Permits, and all other documents applicable to the safe and efficient performance of the daily landfill operations.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operate tractor trailer/tanker to haul leachate from MMF to City of Watertown POTW or any other designated location.
  • Operate leachate loading and hauling equipment.
  • Collect data and maintain records and logs, both paper copies and/or in electronic format.
  • Collect leachate samples of loads delivered.
  • Operate light, medium and heavy-duty construction equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform Earth moving tasks, with minimal or no supervision, such as cuts, fills, hauling, loading, clearing/grubbing, ditching, grading, and maintenance tasks such as sweeping, sewer jetting, mowing auguring, and moisture/dust control.
  • Maintain accurate work order sheets to include the materials used and the work performed, as directed by the Assistant Landfill Superintendent, or designee.
  • Assist the Assistant Landfill Superintendent in ensuring that all operators follow the proper equipment maintenance and operational procedures.
  • Monitor and report to the Assistant Landfill Superintendent any equipment failures and/or concerns.
  • Perform daily maintenance, equipment inspections, and safety checks on equipment and vehicles.
  • Coordinate repair/maintenance requirements with the Assistant Landfill Superintendent.
  • Perform site maintenance tasks such as sewer jetting, plastic pipe welding, minor repairs, and leachate tank cleaning.
  • Perform manual labor as required, including but not limited to, mowing, litter picking, hydro seeding, tree cutting, snow and ice control and removal, etc.
  • Maintain operational supplies, to include any required materials for the performance of daily activities and any special, assigned projects.
  • Assist other employees with maintenance tasks.
  • Attend all training sessions assigned, with satisfactory completion.
  • Related duties as required.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Knowledge of landfill operations and cell construction practices.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance and repair of landfill-related equipment, tools and facilities.
  • Ability to effectively operate computer systems, iPads, and general office equipment and be able to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and other software as needed.
  • Ability to operate GPS system and general computer hardware.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and other MMF employees.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, walk long distances in snow and muddy conditions, climb ladders and slopes to access work sites.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Must meet the training certification requirements for confined space entrant, confined space attendant, and confined space rescue in accordance with the Authority Health and Safety Manual.

Education:

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

Professional Certification/Licenses:

  • Minimum of one certification from an accredited course in landfill operations.
  • New York State Class A CDL License.

Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of experience in the operation of a tractor trailer/tanker.
  • Minimum of three years of experience with operating heavy equipment.
  • Minimum of three years of experience performing Earth moving tasks.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be deemed acceptable.

Minimum Driver’s License: New York State Class “A” with any necessary endorsements needed for the required operation, maintenance, and repair of MMF landfill-related equipment, tools and facilities.

Travel Requirements:  <10%

Typical Work Schedule: Regularly works Monday through Friday during normal business hours and requires willingness to work a flexible schedule when needed, and rotational On-Call schedule.

Environmental: Outdoor Environment: Works outdoors with exposure to weather conditions (rain, snow, sun, wind, extreme cold and heat.)
