SummaryThe Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH), founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Considered one of the finest institutions of its kind in North America, the Museum offers an incredible visitor experience, attracting roughly 325,000 visitors a year. There are more than 140 public education programs and over 70,000 students served annually. The Museum employs about 160 people.
Building on its strong foundation of excellence in education and research, the Museum is poised to transform itself. The Museum will invite and engage a broader audience in the exploration of science and the natural world by revolutionizing the way it presents natural history. The Museum has launched a capital campaign to support a dramatic renovation and expansion of its facilities and exhibits. This ambitious plan will position the Museum to play a leading role in regional and national efforts to improve science education and increase scientific literacy.

DescriptionThe Sr. Director of People and Culture serves as the head of the Human Resources function and as a strategic business partner to the leadership team in leading and creating initiatives, systems, and best practices to recruit, develop, and train an inclusive and high-performing workforce. This role is responsible for building an organizational culture that fosters engagement and supports advancement of our mission and strategic plans.
The Sr. Director of People and Culture leads, develops and implements strategies for talent acquisition, performance management and professional development. Additionally, the Sr. Director drives a strategy to support efforts to attract, develop, and retain a diverse workforce while encouraging innovation, learning, and cross-cultural collaboration. In this role, there will also be an opportunity to lead and grow the team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation)
Employee Relations
  • Advise management in appropriate resolution of employee relations issues or organizational policy matters. 
  • Respond to inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs. 
  • Facilitate dispute resolution of employee concerns.
  • Provide guidance on the disciplinary process and termination of employees.
  • Conduct HR investigations for all complaints alleging discrimination, harassment, unfair treatment, or other employment concerns; make recommendations to management regarding corrective action when warranted; and coordinate with legal counsel as needed.
Talent Acquisition And Staffing
  • Develop and implement recruitment strategies to ensure a robust and diverse candidate pool for all job openings.
  • Manage the recruitment and selection process to ensure consistency across all departments; this includes interviewing, background checks, testing and selection of candidates.
  • Ensure an effective and consistent onboarding experience for all new employees to foster positive attitudes toward company mission and goals. 
Talent Management And Leadership Development
  • Develop and implement best practices for employee retention and talent management, including those that reinforce diversity in the workplace.
  • Train, coach and support managers to navigate performance evaluations, promotions, disciplinary action, termination and other HR issues.
  • Recommend and/or develop training programs for managers and staff in relation to safety, sexual harassment, DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility), workplace violence, professional development and other areas of needed training and development.
  • Administer performance management program to ensure effectiveness, compliance, and equity within the organization. 
  • Perform research and evaluate ongoing development of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) practices and procedures.
  • Participate in appropriate human resources professional organizations to stay abreast of current developments in the field of Human Resources. 
Total Rewards/Benefits & Compensation
  • Administer benefits programs such as life, health, dental, vision, disability, retirement, paid time off, leave of absence, disability accommodations and employee assistance programs. 
  • Administer compensation administration program to ensure compliance and equity within the organization. 
  • Responsible for the coordination and administration of merit increases. 
  • Create/revise job descriptions and conducts wage surveys within the labor market to determine appropriate compensation plans.
  • Prepare and oversee the budget for the HR Department.
General HR Administration
  • Maintain knowledge and application of all relevant employment laws and regulations at the local, state and national level to ensure organizational compliance. This includes educating and advising managers and senior leaders on HR-related legal and regulatory matters and ensuring all HR programs, practices and policies are aligned.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant recordkeeping for all benefits, as well as employee transactions such as hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews, and terminations, as well as employee statistics for government reporting. Ensure that employee files and records are properly and securely maintained.
  • Serve as liaison with HRIS system (currently ADP) to ensure it is being used to its full abilities, maximizing the use of reporting and analytics and promoting the efficiency and digitalization of HR processes.
  • Oversee handling of worker’s compensation claims; investigate accidents and prepare reports for OSHA and applicable insurance carriers.
  • Oversee handling of unemployment compensation claims.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field with a minimum of ten (10) years’ experience. Five (5) years of management/supervisory experience required.
  • Strong business acumen and leadership skills. 
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance, including federal, state and local employment law, FMLA, ADA, EEO, ACA, etc.
  • Subject matter expert in all HR functions such as compensation, benefits, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, recruitment, HR strategy, training and development.
  • Strong focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) principles.
  • Demonstrated experience leading an organization through strategic and transactional change.
  • Ability to provide guidance and direction to direct reports and others, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance. 
  • Proficient with HRIS systems and reporting tools, as well as MS Office Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
