GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
The purpose of this classification is to ensure the safety of patrons at the River Park Aquatic Center; which involves the prevention of accidents and accidental loss of life.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATEMENT Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees may be subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Under general supervision and/or in the absence of the Park Manager, Aquatic Supervisor or Assistant Aquatic Supervisor, this position ensures the safety of patrons and staff at the River Park Aquatic Center; which involves rule enforcement for the prevention of accidents and accidental loss of life.
  • Monitors activities in and near the water through patron surveillance. Enforcing facility rules and regulations and educating patrons about them. Rescuing swimmers in distress. Sets an example of proper lifeguarding practices for other staff and reinforces rules and lifeguard procedures.
  • Position provides standard first aid, assists with pool operational and maintenance responsibilities, and ensures favorable health conditions by helping ensure pool safety and sanitation standards are met during all periods of operational hours.
  • Participates in and helps facilitate ongoing in-service training programs. Must possess excellent public relations and interpersonal skills; good verbal and written communication skills and generate appropriate reports regarding accidents, incidents, and other communication as necessary for the Park Manager or Aquatic Supervisor/Assistant Aquatic Supervisor.
  • Cash handling skills and computer skills are required to process program registrations and facility rentals for patrons. Willingness to attain additional training as assigned and perform in the capacities allowed by them such as registration program, facility rental program, swim meet manager program.
  • Must possess aquatic specialization certifications such as American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard , (ARC)Standard First Aid Certification , (ARC) CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and a valid (ARC) Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification. Must be proficient in First Aid and CPR/AED and lifeguarding skills, swimming, and rescue skills.
  • Possession of and/or willingness to attain additional certifications and perform in the capacities allowed by them such as swim coach, water exercise instructor, Aquatic Facility Operator or equivalent preferred.
  • Oversees the overall arrangement of facilities and equipment, ensuring proper supply, set-up, and condition to maintain security and safety for both personnel and patrons.
  • Assists in maintaining general appearance and cleanliness in pool areas by cleaning and vacuuming pool and filter system, monitoring pool chlorine and PH levels, and maintaining pool deck, water features and pool bathhouse.
    Responds to the general public, both in person and by phone, regarding City Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department; provides information or directs inquiries to appropriate department resources.
  • Ensures adequate inventory and supply for areas under charge; investigates all damage, loss and incident reports.
  • Enforces established policy, procedures, and regulations of the area(s) of assignment.
  • Assist with scheduling of lifeguards to ensure that adequate coverage of pool areas are maintained during operating hours.
  • Orients lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities. Ensures that lifeguards are current on their training and certifications.
  • Workday/time might vary pending on season/programing. Must be flexible and work outside of scheduled hours if or when necessary.
  • Attends work on continuous and regular basis.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • In the event of a declared state of emergency, employees in this classification may be called into work during days or hours other than those for which they are regularly scheduled.

  5. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculate decimals and percentages; utilize principles of descriptive statistics.
  6. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
  7. Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the direction, control and planning of an entire program or set of programs.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Applicant must be eighteen (18) years of age or greater.
  • Currently possess aquatic specialization certifications such as American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard , (ARC) Standard First Aid Certification , (ARC) CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and a valid (ARC) Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.
  • Possession of and/or willingness to attain additional certifications and perform in the capacities allowed by them such as swim coach, water exercise instructor,
  • Aquatic Facility Operator are preferred.
  • At least 1-2 years previous lifeguarding experience and/or related certifications. Applicant must demonstrate the ability to fulfill the physical demands of the assigned work and provide an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • At the time of hire a physical lifeguard skills aptitude test must be passed.
Physical Ability: Tasks may involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, and/or toxic/poisonous agents, depending on area of assignment.
