Head Lifeguard/Swim Instructor – ¾ time

We are Mountlake Terrace Recreation & Parks and we’re seeking reliable, responsible and enthusiastic employees to join our aquatics team. We protect the community with our lifeguarding and teach water safety instilling a lifelong love of swimming. Lifeguards and swim instructors are essential for a healthy, safe community. Hourly wage range is $20.95-25.75. This is a benefitted position and offers 32-36 hours a week. Job position will be required to work weekends and some weekdays.
As Head Lifeguard/Swim Instructor, your primary responsibility involves responding to any level of incident around the entire facility, reacting efficiently and tactfully with the public and having the capability of enforcing regulations.
This position also includes opening and/or closing the facility and lifeguarding assigned areas of our indoor pool. When teaching swim lessons, you’ll be helping with set up and clean up of the lesson area, maintaining good communication and relationships with the children and their parents, as well as other aquatic-related duties.
Responsibilities
- Instruct and train for the Aquatic Instruction Program covering ages infants to adults and including preschool, school age, parent & tot adaptive swimming levels
- Provide leadership, problem solving and training
- Open and/or close the facility, available for either morning or evening work pre-scheduled shifts
- Execute, evaluate, implement changes and promote the instructional programs
- Ability to supervise staff in the absence of the Aquatics Supervisor, Programmer and Coordinators
- Instruct swimming classes, aquatic fitness classes and specialty programs
- Perform lifeguard duties and maintain excellent lifeguard skills
- Able to be a solo lifeguard when necessary
- Deck supervisor for a lifeguard team and have the ability to train and lead lifeguard staff
- Assist in the supervision, training, evaluating (performing informal and formal evaluations) of aquatic personnel as assigned
- Provide leadership during emergencies including performing emergency and rescue procedures
- Legibly complete and review written reports
- Supervising special pool rentals and occasionally overnight rentals
- Plan and assist with special events
- Provide customer service, monitoring and maintaining cleanliness, and securing facility usage
- Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
- At least 20 years of age
- High school diploma or GED and minimum two years of college
- Aquatic experience may be substituted for college education on a year-to-year basis
- Minimum of three years prior work experience in aquatics, recreation and parks or other related field
- Have current Lifeguarding, CPR/AED and First Aid from any nationally recognized organization currently recognized by Washington State Dept. of Health
- Must pass a thorough background investigation
- Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act
- Continuing Education:
o Maintain current Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications
o Attend required monthly lifeguard in-service training and swim instruction training as assigned
o Obtain additional professional certifications for aquatics department, if applicable
