General Summary

Help support Parks and Recreation in their mission to enhance the quality of life for all through the stewardship of public land and parks and to provide quality recreational experiences. The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Commitment, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Collaboration.
The hiring amount is $24.00 an hour. This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.
Seasonal Pool Managers provide oversight of pool operations, staff supervision, and maintenance. Supervision is exercised over Lifeguard I, Lifeguard II, Customer Service Attendants, Instructors and other temporary part-time positions. Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision is exercised over subordinate staff. Reports to a Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supervises daily operation of the pool, adhering to all applicable City policies and procedures;
  • Performs all water tests, checks filters and adds necessary chemicals to ensure properly balanced, sanitized water quality;
  • Ensures that pool and related facilities are cleaned on a regular basis to ensure all OSHA and Departmental standards are met;
  • Handles complaints in a diplomatic and professional manner, refers to the Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist when necessary;
  • Responsible for oversight of daily Cash Handling Policy;
  • Facilitates, with the assistance of the Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist, all pre-season and in-service training to review duties, skills and facility specific operations;
  • Prepares and verifies employee lifeguarding work schedules and works closely with Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist regarding all programs/lessons;
  • Responsible for the timely collection, verification, and delivery of time entry into the time clock system and reports completion to the Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist;
  • Maintains daily records, including incident and accident reports, water quality and temperature, maintenance, and patron usage; reports all incidents/accidents to Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist in a timely manner;
  • Keeps an accurate and up-to-date inventory of all chemicals, supplies, and equipment;
  • Reports all chemical and supply needs to the Parks and Recreation Maintenance Specialist on a daily basis;
  • Evaluates and communicates effectively with staff and provides leadership to improve performance;
  • Completes daily facility safety checks and ensures that all safety equipment is both stored and located properly;
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age by employment start date.
  • Minimum of five (5) months in a supervisory role in an aquatics environment as a Lifeguard II, Head Lifeguard, Assistant Pool Manager, Pool Manager or equivalent level position. (Experience may have been obtained across multiple operational seasons.)
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in sports management, recreation or related field.
  • Must possess a current Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Must complete training with Charlottesville Parks and Recreation to include but not limited to: in-service training, sexual harassment prevention training, water testing, chemical handling, cash handling, paperwork management and reporting.
  • Must be available to work varied shifts including weeknights, weekends and holidays, and be on call for continuity of operations.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Aquatic Facility Operator/Certified Pool Operator certification preferred.
  • Oxygen Administration and Preventing Disease Transmission and Waterpark Skills Module preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of water safety rules and of life saving/first aid practices and techniques; general knowledge of the cleaning and maintenance requirements for large pools, related equipment, and supplies preferred; considerable skill in and strength in swimming; ability to enforce rules and regulations with the public and staff in a respectful, professional manner; able to clean/maintain swimming pools and related facilities; ability to thrive in a high stress environment while balancing multiple demands.

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays, stand-by/on-call and/or weather-emergency on-call. This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing. Position may require driving a City-owned vehicle and is subject to the vehicle use policy and procedures.
A majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, gases/gas leaks, blood-borne pathogens, acidic or harsh substances, infectious bacteria and/or fumes/airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
