CENTER FOR GREAT APES is Hiring a Veterinary Technician Near Wauchula, FL

Job Summary:
The Center for Great Apes has an opportunity for a full-time Veterinary Technician to support the Center's mission by providing support for the administration of a preventive health program, medical and surgical case management, diagnostic laboratory and imaging capabilities, medical husbandry/animal training, and overall technical support for veterinary operations.

For 30 years, the Center has been providing a permanent sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees rescued or retired from the entertainment industry, the exotic pet trade, research, or other situations where great apes need rescue and a permanent home.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares for, organizes, and assist during veterinary rounds/procedures.
  • Assist veterinarian during medical procedures, including set up and use of equipment and supplies, assisting with chemical or manual restraint, monitoring patients, administration of treatments, production of radiographs, sample collection, record keeping, and observation of patients during recovery, breakdown, and clean up after the procedure.
  • Conduct all in house laboratory analysis for hematology, chemistry, serology, cytology, parasitology, bacteriology, and proper sample handling and processing.
  • Help triage and relay information on health issues to appropriate management and Veterinarian. Prepare and relay prescribed treatments to appropriate staff.
  • Perform emergency treatment and triage of residents in the absence of the veterinarian and under their remote direction.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the clinical supply inventory, including stocking and ordering, and in the proper maintenance of medical equipment, sterile supplies, and surgical instruments.
  • Input laboratory and treatment data into computerized medical records.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary technology or Bachelor’s, AA, or AS degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, or related degree.
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) -or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Minimum of two years of full-time paid experience.
  • 1-2 years of zoo, exotic, and/or emergency animal experience a plus

Other

  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Proof of negative tuberculosis (TB) screening.
  • Proof of COVID and Flu immunization.
  • Pre-employment drug screening.
