Job Posting Information

The City of Duluth seeks an Assistant City Attorney to perform Criminal Prosecution and Criminal Litigation work.
The Office of the City Attorney is committed to providing excellent legal services, advice and representation to the City, its officials and staff, advocating for justice and safeguarding the interests of the public in the criminal justice system, and honoring the highest principles of the legal profession.
At the direction, and under the general supervision, of the City Attorney, the Assistant City Attorney position performs professional legal work, primarily in the areas of city ordinance, petty misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and designated gross misdemeanor crimes occurring in the City of Duluth. This position will also include other criminal litigation work, such as DWI vehicle forfeitures, parking ticket appeals, and related work.
We are particularly looking for someone with a passion for addressing domestic violence and racial justice.

Duluth is located close to Lake Superior’s beautiful North Shore and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, but still an easy drive to Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Research, prepare, and handle criminal cases at all stages from charging to sentencing, including drafting formal complaints, written motions, memoranda, and appellate briefs.
  • Argue motions, conduct court and jury trials, and argue appellate issues.
  • Respond to inquiries from law enforcement, criminal justice partners, and members of the public.
  • Work with investigators, victim services coordinator, paralegals and legal assistants to prepare cases for trial.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be admitted to practice law in Minnesota and in good standing.
  • Thorough understanding of criminal law, the rules of criminal procedure, and the rules of evidence, including electronic and online sources.
  • Knowledge of local ordinances, state laws, established precedents, and legal reference sources as well as methods of legal research.
  • Ability to deal respectfully and effectively with people from all cultures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Any applicant who has been found qualified to participate in a selection process for a position in the classified service who has reason to contest the validity or fairness of any step in the selection process may appeal to the Civil Service Board within 10 calendar days of the examination. (If the examination is an Education/Experience Review, the applicant must appeal within 10 calendar days of the closing date for accepting applications.) The notice of appeal shall be in writing, shall contain a complete statement of the matter in controversy and the relief requested, and shall be signed and dated by the appellant. The notice shall be addressed to the Civil Service Board and be delivered to the Human Resources Office.
