Substitute Job DescriptionTitle: Building Bridges Substitute
Qualifications: 18 years or older with a high school diploma or GED, experience working with infants/toddlers
Reports To: Site Supervisor
Location: BHS Building Bridges
Date Revised: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023
Job Goals: Supervised by the Site Supervisor, the substitute staff will fill in for classroom teachers in their absence and work directly with children in the classroom.

  • Engages children in positive interactions and implements pleasant arrivals and departures.
  • Uses routines to build relationships and learning opportunities.
  • Shows respect for children and encourages respectful interactions.
  • Uses language to build relationships and strengthen the child’s social and emotional competencies.
  • Works with dual language learners to ensure progress is being made toward school readiness goals
and learning English.
  • Uses indirect and direct behavior guidance techniques.
  • Supports children as they learn to resolve their own conflicts.
  • Strives to meet each child’s individual needs.
  • Accompanies assigned children and knows counts at all times.
Activities and Environment
  • Maintains a clean, organized, inviting environment that is safe and developmentally appropriate.
  • Implements a variety of developmentally appropriate learning experiences by following the weekly
lesson plan provided by the classroom teacher or site supervisor.
  • Uses the outdoors as part of the learning environment and complies with playground supervision
procedures.
  • Teaches and provides guidance for the development of good eating and health habits.
  • Follows the posted daily schedule to meet the needs of the children.
  • Accepts responsibility for shared space and helps keep it neat and organized.
  • Rotates and sanitizes materials and disposes of broken/recalled items as instructed by the
supervisor.
  • Completes assessments, portfolios, lesson plans, data entry, etc. if in long term sub position.
  • Maintains close supervision of children at all times.
  • Ensures all minimum licensing, Early Head Start and Better Beginnings requirements are being met
on a daily basis.
  • Lifts 10-30 pounds regularly, up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Meets program attendance requirements as outlined in the personnel handbook. Maintains a flexible
schedule to meet the needs of the center.
  • Submits time off (or calls ESS) and clocks in/out in Frontline at assigned time. Is punctual.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and follows the program dress code.
  • Open to new ideas and suggestions for working with children and takes initiative.
  • Accepts responsibility for job-related tasks, to include any documentation and/or record keeping.
  • Attends all staff meetings and meets program expectations for professional development (25 hours
annually).
  • Knows and is able to follow emergency procedures and risk management protocol.
  • Keeps Lead Teachers/Supervisor apprised of individual children’s status.
  • Accepts all assignments given by supervisor.
  • Maintains all program requirements: minimum licensing, program policies as outlined in the EHS-
Childcare Partnership Agreement and CCES Personnel Handbook as well as quality expectations.
  • Completes yearly self-evaluation.
  • Follows expectations for confidentiality, especially when service credit workers or visitors are
present.
  • Ensures staff-child ratios are met at all times.
  • Assists parents with questions and/or refers to Lead Teachers/Supervisor.
  • Assists with discipline issues and/or refers to Lead Teachers/Supervisor.
  • Mandated reporter under the Arkansas Child Maltreatment Reporting Act.
Interactions With Parents, Staff And Others
  • Works to build positive relationships with parents, co-workers and others.
  • Communicates effectively with parents, co-workers and others daily; avoids gossip.
  • Works as a part of a team with concern for the entire program and is flexible.
Additional qualifications include enjoyment of young children, good mental and physical health, and respect for diverse cultural backgrounds, willingness to complete training requirements, and willingness to undergo background checks required by law.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Based on Child Enrichment Services Salary Schedule
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated based on the Child Enrichment Services Personnel Handbook and District Classified Personnel Evaluation.
