About The PositionThe Spanish Teacher reports to the Dean of Faculty and works with other members of Stuart Hall’s academic team to implement the Humanities Department’s program. This position is part-time but may be combined with other roles and responsibilities to create a full-time position, based on the candidate's background and the school's needs. Current known needs include teaching English as a Second Language, teaching upper school math, teaching upper school life science courses, and coaching basketball or soccer. The ideal candidate for this position will live on campus and be a part of our Residential Life Team.
ResponsibilitiesThe Spanish Teacher’s major responsibilities include (these lists are essential, but not exhaustive; additional functions and requirements may be assigned by supervisors as deemed appropriate):
  • Teaching 2-3 sections of Spanish classes, likely including the full range of course offerings from Exploratory Spanish through Spanish 4
  • Implementing the School’s Mastery program by instructing course standards, using scales to provide feedback, and crafting assessments tied to targets
  • Integrating technology seamlessly into teaching strategies and practices, including the use of Google Classroom
  • Providing students in the classroom with timely, ongoing, and meaningful feedback, including comments for each student at the end of grading periods
  • Participating in building and sustaining an inclusive school community and a program
Responsibilities Outside Of General Instruction Include
  • Leading or facilitating a co-curricular program or serving as a coach for an interscholastic or club team.
  • Involvement in the residential life program, either as an on-campus resident serving as a Dorm Parent or Campus Support, which includes a weekly duty night and a rotation of weekend duties throughout the school year, or as a member of the Weekend Duty Team, which includes leading or chaperoning weekend student activities periodically throughout the year
  • Lunch and/or Recess Supervision
  • Serving as an advisor to a group of 8-12 students
  • Driving the School’s passenger vehicles
  • Attendance at regular school gatherings such as chapels and all school meetings; at all faculty meetings and professional development days; and at major school events such as Orientation and Graduation
  • Adhering to the guidelines in the employee manual
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Expertise in Spanish instruction to non-native speakers
    • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Strong collaboration, team-oriented, and independent working skills
    • Strong computer skills and demonstrated proficiency with Google applications
    • Communicate effectively with all constituents – students, colleagues, administrators, and parents
    • Exert force regularly to lift, carry, push, pull, reach for or otherwise move objects, including textbooks and other teaching materials. Sedentary work involves sitting, standing, and walking around the classroom.
    • Valid driver’s license required as well as ability to pass a background check
    • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
    • Able to travel around various parts of the school building and campus. Some areas of the historic main campus are only accessible by stairs. Reasonable accommodations will be provided to allow employees to perform essential duties.
  • Additional background and experience: if you have any of the following skills or experiences, you are encouraged to highlight them in your application materials, but please know an absence of any of these will not negatively affect your candidacy
    • Previous experience working with English-language learner
    • Previous experience with Standards or Project-Based Learning
    • Previous experience and/or interest in boarding schools (residential life)
    • Demonstrated experience taking initiative
    • Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and managing a program or initiative that involved leading others (this experience does not have to be teaching-related)
    • An interest in being involved in other areas of school life, such as coaching, chaperoning weekend activities, or working with student groups
  • Candidates who have any of the following backgrounds, experiences, or interests will receive strong consideration:
    • Coaching basketball
    • Coaching soccer
    • Advising the school yearbook
    • Living on campus and being part of the School’s residential life program
