OUR UNIT CLERK

The primary function of this position is to perform clerical and receptionist duties on assigned nursing unit (s). Maintains and records supplies and equipment necessary to provide resident care. The secondary function is to assist with Medical Records which includes organizing and directing all aspects of medical records services, maintaining residents records in compliance with all federal, state, and local guidelines, standards and regulations which govern the facility, and, as directed by the Director of Nursing Services and/or the Administrator so as to ensure all medical records are maintained in proper order for each resident and former residents. It also entails the ordering/inventory of nursing and ancillary supplies and/or equipment as necessary.

  • Act as receptionist for the nursing unit, answering inquiries of a general nature by residents, visitors, other department nursing staff, and physicians, assisting them in a friendly and cooperative manner.
  • Take and relay messages to personnel on the unit.
  • Run errands for Supervisors and Nursing as delegated.
  • Compiles resident clinical records on admission through discharge.
  • Follows established procedures for chart audits on admission, discharge and throughout the resident’s stay.
  • Files records, reports, etc., and retrieves/copies records when requested by medical staff or other authorized persons/agencies.
  • Utilizes a computer to store, retrieve, and process medical information.
  • Transcribes dictated information.
  • Orders nursing and ancillary supplies and/or equipment so as to maintain a proper inventory.
  • Inventories stock areas so as to monitor usage and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies/equipment.
  • Distributes/stocks supplies at Nursing Stations.
  • Solicits cost-effective purchasing plans.
  • Performs all other related activities as directed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of the facility including a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to walk and sit for extended periods of time.
  • Other demands include frequent arm and finger movements.
  • Required to reach, handle and manipulate equipment on occasion.
  • Moves intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Works in and around all areas of the facility.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions and must then adjust schedule accordingly.
  • May be subject to handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, blood and body fluids, diseases, conditions, etc., such as TB, AIDS, and Hepatitis B viruses.
  • Will be subject to emotionally distraught residents, family members, visitors, personnel, etc. and must possess the ability to cope with the stresses of the environment.
  • Must be able to work extended hours to accommodate the position requirements if necessary and on all three shifts to be available for the remainder of the workforce as necessary.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with Point Click Care is preferred
  • Clerical skills such as typing, copying, computer literacy, etc.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Ability to follow oral and written direction.
