However, it is only 20% for first-generation students and a mere 4% for foster youth. 25% of foster youth graduates will be homeless after graduation.
At Ready to Succeed, we are changing these ratios everyday, one student at a time.
Ready to Succeed (RTS) empowers first-generation and foster youth college students to graduate, launch and accelerate their careers, and reach their full potential. We offer our RTS Scholars a unique combination of personalized college and career coaching, connections to industry professionals, placements in paid internships, and access to financial and mental health resources.
Our program is a proven path to career success.
About the CAREER ADVISOR role at Ready to Succeed:As an RTS Career Advisor you will work with a small caseload of RTS Scholars (approx. 30) beginning in their sophomore year of college and remaining with them through their graduation.
You will act as a personal career navigator, helping them identify their strengths, interests, and values and discover and explore the wide range of industries and opportunities in the marketplace. You will help each student develop a career action plan, create and update their Career Toolkit (including resume, cover letter, interview skills, etc) and provide support as each Scholar works towards their annual goals of completing their academic year and finding a summer internship or experiential learning opportunity.
While the focus of this role is career support, the ability to work with our scholars holistically is a must. A trauma-informed approach is essential with the ability to build trust and help scholars prioritize their needs and guide them to the appropriate resources. Knowing our scholars often lack appropriate support and face unique challenges, RTS Advisors work closely with their advising colleagues and meet regularly to discuss caseloads and receive ongoing trauma-informed training and outside support from social work/mental health professionals as needed.
How your skills and passion will come to life at Ready to Succeed:
  • Coaching students on how to write their resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, elevator pitches, and professional emails; interview skills, professional relationship building and networking techniques and skills, practicing mock interviews (in person and video), etc.
  • Identifying and tracking student challenges and needs outside the scope of college and career, looping in our Community Engagement Resource Manager for additional resources and support.
  • Working closely with the Pathways Team to find experiential learning opportunities, companies, and network professionals for scholars to engage with.
  • Coordinating, creating, contributing to, and delivering professional development workshops, presentations, and materials in collaboration with other Advisors.
  • Managing caseload of advisees and maintaining current student records in Salesforce and Google Drive.
Qualifications we’re looking for:
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year institution. Degrees in Psychology, HR, Higher Education, Education Counseling, Student Affairs, or similar programs are desirable.
    • Preferred: A Master’s degree (obtained or currently in progress) in Higher Education, Education Counseling, Student Affairs, or similar program.
  • 2 - 3 years of experience in career services with college students and/or underserved populations; career mentoring, programming, nonprofits and advocacy, or equity and inclusion programs.
  • An understanding of internship and entry-level employment opportunities in a broad cross-section of various sector companies.
  • Database management experience. Excel will be considered but Salesforce is preferred.
  • Sensitivity to the unique college and career development challenges common to former foster youth and first-generation college students.
  • Experience working with Motivational Interviewing training and or Trauma Informed training.
  • Excellent and effective verbal and written communication skills; able to adapt communication styles to suit many different audiences.
  • Zoom and Salesforce professional usage experience, including back-end management.
  • Interest in the nonprofit industry and working with underserved youth.
  • The courage to ask for help. We value asking questions, sharing ideas and perspectives, and transparent communication.
