The Opportunity
The HLS Recruiter leads initiatives to attract & onboard the best available talent and bringing them into HLS. The Recruiter partners in developing and implementing recruiting strategies to source qualified candidates for select field staff roles. The Recruiter helps create processes to ensure a positive candidate experience throughout. The Recruiter works closely with Branch Managers, Production Managers, and Human Resources professionals at HLS.
Position Responsibilities
Recruiting & Onboarding for Heritage Landscape Services Field Staff Positions
  • Builds applicant sources by researching & contacting community services, colleges, employment agencies, media, & internet sites.
  • Meets with the community as a salesperson would “cold-call,” approaching potential candidates in the public, handing out flyers, business cards, & collecting contact information. At points in the year assist with onboarding candidates.
  • Seek to build “network” of potential candidates who may not be ready, or available to join HLS at present but who are willing to stay in touch for future opportunities.
  • Provide community with information about HLS’ opportunities and benefits.
  • Build repport with the Northern Virginia & MD community.
  • Recommended policies and practices such as compensation, benefits, and perks with a goal of making HLS the employer of choice.
  • Maintain company’s applicant tracking system (ATS), ensuring maximum utilization of the system tools to enable scalable recruiting services, monitoring applications, offers, job acceptance, and job declines.
  • Create and maintain a dashboard of recruiting metrics and progress on open positions.
  • Comply with employment laws and corresponding government rules and regulations regarding all recruiting, screening, interviewing, hiring and onboarding practices.
  • Conduct phone screens, arrange interviews, and arrange assessments (as directed), including performing all scheduling of interviews and meetings.
  • Ensure proper pre-employment activities are completed for all new hires, including applications, reference and background checks, MVR checks (where applicable), drug tests, and offer letters.
  • Participate in new employee orientation and assist in their integration into the team.
  • Work with Production Manager to encourage that each new employee is provided with a “Buddy” who will take responsibility for the new employee’s initial experience in their new role.
  • Communicate career development opportunities throughout HLS.
  • Assist with exit interviews to understand why valued employees leave HLS.
  • Assist with the Safety training.
  • Assist with the company's social media.

  • Promote a joyful atmosphere and a high-performance culture by posting awards, achievements and client testimonials through bulletin boards, social media, press releases and other means of communication.
  • Meet crews in the field with drinks or snacks to boost morale and demonstrate they are cared for.
  • Assist with employee appreciation activities such as cookouts and team building exercises.
  • Engage in social media posts and other community outreach communication that expands the awareness of the HLS Staff.
  • Take crews to lunch
  • Demonstrate poise and balance and strong listening skills when hearing from employees about issues that concern them.
  • Facilitate culture strengthening exercises such as taking leaders through books or training material that unifies the HLS team.

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required; Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or degree closely related to the Landscape industry is preferred.
  • Must have exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Clean driving record
  • Exceptional communication skill; specifically writing skills to be able to create enticing job postings leading to significant candidate interest and verbal communication skills to be able to quickly but politely make a determination on candidate fit for a role.
