Job description

Athena Engineering is a small-business with a long history - 40 years of history to be exact! We're a contractor specializing in Mechanical HVAC and building automation systems. To be clear - we'renota PLC contractor and we don't do process automation - our systems automate a building's HVAC, security, access-control, and energy management. We install systems like this for hospitals, commercial buildings, laboratories, entertainment venues, theme parks, public buildings and other exciting places throughout Southern California.

This is an entry-level position for an individual that loves building things and then making them smart. You'll use your technical knowledge and fancy new engineering degree for building automation project design, material selection, and development of sequence of operation. You've got to be GREAT with computers and have an understanding of computer-operated systems and engineering design tools (e.g. AutoCAD, VISIO, EDS). 

The person who takes this job has an interest in construction, specifically smart buildings, mechanical HVAC, and electrical systems. You've seen construction drawings and can grasp mechanical concepts. You also understand basic programming languages, but don't want to become a computer software programmer.

You will be visiting job sites once or twice a week, but you'll be primarily office based.

DUTIES:

  1. Performs as a Building Automation Design Engineer in the production of controls systems, design drawings, sequence of operations and submittals for lower to mid-level control systems
  2. Researches and selects control system peripherals. (end devices)
  3. Reads and interprets construction drawings and project specifications and ensures that the control systems design complies with the specs.
  4. Designs building automation systems for large and/or complex buildings consisting of mechanical system layouts, electrical drawings, bill of materials, sequence of operations, valve, damper & AFMS schedules, and DDC panel layouts to meet the intent of the project plans, specifications and contract documents.
  5. Designs BAS network architecture to support operator workstations, DDC field panels, field controllers & third-party integration devices. Analyzes plans, construction contract specifications, and codes to determine project requirements and risks.
  6. Provides start-up and checkout documentation to the installation team for use in commissioning and validation.
  7. Prepares engineering re-estimate and follows up with appropriate sales and management to assure understanding of and satisfaction with job scope.
  8. Prepares specifications and drawings for special components and panels purchased from outside suppliers. Selects proper types and sizes of control products to meet project requirements.
  9. Prepares all request for information (RFIs) on pre-installation extras or change orders to submit to the customer or general/ subcontractor.
  10. Assists business development department in preparing proposals, as needed

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, Windows, File Structure, AutoCAD, VISIO. Basic TCP/IP network structure and web navigation are desired.
  • Have an understanding of electrical circuitry, construction environments, and safe work practices
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, electrical, mechanical and control drawings
  • Must be highly organized and possess the ability to work in a high paced environment with the ability to prioritize tasks to meet the schedules given by the leadership
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate independently and autonomously and take ownership of all tasks.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and team oriented.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
