ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Enfield Police Department is a nationally and state accredited agency. There are approximately 101 sworn officers within the department. Divisions include Patrol, Detective, & Traffic. These divisions are further broken down to provide opportunities for officers to work in positions such as Community Policing Team, School Resource Officer, K9 Unit, Field Training Officer, Motorcycle Officer, & Drone Unit. We also participate in the regional Metro Traffic Services traffic enforcement unit, and the Capitol Region Emergency Services Team.
The department has 35 marked police vehicles which consist mostly of Police Interceptors. In addition, there is a Drone Unit, Special Ops / Prisoner Transport van, two Harley Davidson motorcycles, a Mobile Command Center, and 18 unmarked vehicles.
Patrol Officers share the use of a cruiser with one or two other officers only. Some officers have sole use of their cruiser.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Duties involve routine police work, following clearly prescribed standard police practice, and involving straightforward application of readily understood department rules and procedures. Duties include, but are not limited to, patrol and surveillance, traffic control and enforcement, report writing, crisis response, community engagement, emergency medical response, and court testimony.
SHIFT REQUIRMENTS
Uniformed officers work eight-hour days with five days on followed by three days off. The following week consists of five on and two off. This 5/3 5/2 schedule continues for 15 weeks at which time officers bid by seniority for which shift they want to work on. Officers bid for one of six shifts per day. Shifts start at 11:00pm, 12:00am, 7:00am,8:00am, 3:00pm, & 4:00pm.
TRAINING
Initial training for officers occurs at the Connecticut Police Academy in Meriden, New Britain, or the Hartford Police Academy. Upon graduation from either academy, the officer is assigned to a challenging 16-week field training program conducted by Field Training Officers of the Enfield Police Department. After successfully completing the field training program, officers are assigned to the Patrol Division to begin their career in a solo capacity as a Patrol Officer.
TESTING PROCESS AND METHOD OF SELECTION
Please be advised that the selection process, up to and including background investigation and placement in the Police Academy, may take as long as one year.
Non-Certified Applicants: Candidates who successfully pass all phases of the examination for this position will have their names placed on an Eligible List.
The testing process and method of selection includes, but may not be limited to the following:
· Written Examination (70%)
· Certification of Physical Fitness (40th percentile level certified through CHIP, Inc.)
· Oral Board Interview (70%)
· Polygraph Examination
· Background Investigation: A thorough background and character investigation will be conducted for the specific purpose of obtaining pertinent data for the Town of Enfield Police Department to consider in determining suitability for employment as a Police Officer. Eligible candidates will be required to authorize a release of personal information, however personal or confidential it may appear to be, including, but not limited to, educational, financial/credit agencies and institutions, medical history, employment history, legal complaints, arrests or convictions, and motor vehicle history.

The Police Chief reserves the right to reject any eligible candidate whom, based on the background and character investigation or the medical examination, does not appear to be the most suitable qualified candidate for the position in accordance with the provisions of the Town of Enfield Personnel Rules.
As a condition of obtaining and continued employment with the Town of Enfield Police Department, all police officers hired on or after July 1, 2018, shall adhere to the following standards regarding Body Art:
1. No sworn member of the department shall have any tattoo, scarification, or brand that is visible while on-duty in the summer uniform (short sleeve shirt and trousers).
2. Prior to the commencement of employment an applicant will be required to identify any tattoos, brandings or body art that could potentially place them in violation of this policy.
