Duties

As a Chemist (Analytical), your typical work assignments may include:

  • Serving as a Chemist responsible for performing a wide range of chemical tests and analyses in support of the laboratory mission.
  • Evaluating analytical chemistry procedures and technology for the analyses of illicit drug materials.
  • Applying professional knowledge of physical, chemical and instrumental technics to perform chemical and instrumental analysis.
  • Performing investigations, analysis, and interpretation of the composition, physical and chemical properties of substances.
  • Collecting and interpreting scientific data such as newly gathered statistics, observations, instrument readings, measurements and specimens in terms of their scientific significance.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all of the required qualification requirements described below by the closing of this announcement.
If you are qualifying based on education or if there are mandatory education requirements listed below, you MUST submit a copy of your college transcript with your application.
Basic Qualification Requirements:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR
Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a Degree in a major as described in above paragraph; including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Applicants applying for the GS-11 must meet one of the following requirements:
A. Have at least one full year of qualifying specialized experience that is at least equivalent in difficulty and complexity to work performed at the GS-09 grade level. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Conducting routine chemical analysis of samples; 2) Calibrating and operating analytical instrumentation, such as the gas chromatograph, mass spectrometer, liquid chromatograph, or other laboratory equipment; 3) Generating reports of findings from conducted chemical analysis.
OR
B. Two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree;
OR
C. A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
