POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Manager, Instructional Design, is responsible for leading and implementing the instructional framework of ASH’s portfolio of continuing medical educational activities. In collaboration with ASH-member subject matter experts and staff, the Senior Manager, Instructional Design, develops engaging and effective online learning experiences and assesses attainment of educational goals and impact on learner performance. They also contribute to the preparation of grant proposals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Compliance and Best Practices in Education and Evaluation

  • Designs and implements engaging and impactful learning experiences for the hematology community.
  • Applies adult learning principles and instructional design models to achieve desired outcomes for ASH educational activities.
  • Develops and oversees needs assessment to help determine the knowledge, skills, attitudes, or changes in practice behavior needed by hematologists and leverage data from needs assessment to assist subject matter experts and grant proposals.
  • Recommends appropriate delivery formats for achieving intended learning outcomes.
  • Designs and oversees a diverse range of educational activities, including:
    1. Meetings: In-person gatherings that facilitate knowledge sharing and discussion;
    2. Webinars: Interactive online sessions that engage participants in real-time learning;
    3. Workshops: Collaborative in-person or virtual sessions that foster skill development and knowledge exchange;
    4. eLearning Modules: Self-paced online courses accessible anytime, anywhere;
    5. Microlearning: Bite-sized content for quick consumption, ideal for social media platforms;
    6. Other Innovative Formats: Explore creative approaches to enhance learning experiences.
  • Works collaboratively with member subject-matter experts to create clinical, administrative, and leadership competency-based education.
  • Develops and implements approach(es) for assessing the impact of the ASH CME program on physician knowledge, competence, and performance; population health; as well as the attainment of the educational goals of these activities.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of evaluation and outcomes tools to collect data regarding changes in physician behavior from participation in the Society’s education activities.
  • Works collaboratively with volunteer planners and CME Manager to complete CME Activity Development Form to ensure compliance with ACCME criteria and standards.
  • Works with CME Manager to analyze results of all Society educational activities such as outcomes measures, engagement metrics, and measures of behavioral change for reporting to program planners, faculty, volunteer leaders, funders, and others.
  • Develops and employs strategies to effectively collaborate across departments to ensure resources are available to implement best practices in adult education.
  • Maintains knowledge of available ASH resources that may be integrated into educational activities.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of the ASH learning management system functionality and applies that understanding to facilitate efficient educational design, development, and delivery.
  • Works collaboratively with Information Technology department in the stewardship of the Society’s digital platforms.
  • Optimizes functionality, design, and user experience of learning management system to facilitate efficient design, development, and delivery.

Education Initiatives

  • Works with Committee on Educational Affairs to ensure best practices in adult education theory are used to develop new education activities in personalized medicine and burnout.
  • Develops logic model narratives for Education Department staff and Committee on Educational Affairs to illustrate intended outcomes, the logic for these expectations, and linkages of resources, activities, and products.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 7 years of instructional design experience in healthcare-related field; must have had responsibility for delivering educational activities from the idea stage through development, implementation and evaluation. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Master’s degree in education and/or Instructional Design a plus.
  • Demonstrated initiative and creativity in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Current knowledge of adult learning theory and practices and emerging technologies for education delivery to health care professionals required.
  • Ability to organize and execute multiple high-quality programs and activities on budget and according to established timelines.
  • Working knowledge of learning management systems and an understanding of technical standards for online learning, such as SCORM and alternative formats.,
  • Experience designing content for mobile devices (including microlearning for social media) and personalized education platforms preferred.
  • Mission-driven, team-oriented professional with experience working with volunteer leaders within a medical specialty society preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing relationships with contractors and vendors on short and long-term educational projects.
  • Excellent communication skills including presentations, internal team training, public speaking, writing, active listening, and synthesizing information from diverse sources when working with colleagues, members, and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration with internal and external constituents.
  • Available for travel on occasion to support job responsibilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires ability to speak audibly and listen actively.

Requires ability to use computers, telephones and other office equipment.

Requires periodic out-of-town travel.

ASH has a hybrid work environment, with core in-office days for all ASH staff on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and telework on Mondays and Fridays for eligible positions. The Society’s headquarters is in Washington, DC, and is within walking distance of several Metro stations on the Blue/Orange/Silver and Red lines.
