spcaLA is Hiring an Animal Care Attendant - Lead Near Los Angeles, CA

Primary Function: Under the direct supervision of the PAC Supervisor, cares for the animals in the care and spcaLA, facilitates adoptions, and maintains the Pet Adoption Center facility.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Clean and disinfects cages, dog enclosures, floors, bowls, litter pans and other facility supplies. Ensures all areas are clean by opening and maintain cleanliness of kennels throughout the day i.e. fecal runs, cat litter boxes, etc.
  • Provide food and water for domestic animals at the Pet Adoption Centers. Ensure animals are being fed proper diets/amounts and have fresh water at all times.
  • Walk and/or socialize animals in agency’s care.
  • Facilitate and process the adoption of animals and maintain paperwork.
  • Assist the public with inquiries pertaining to animals and other general information in person, via email or phone.
  • Ensure coordination of tasks to have animals ready for surgery (i.e. required signage, removal of food, etc.)
  • Maintain the required organized stock of all daily supplies (i.e. food/litter bins, towels and cleaning supplies) and assists in the organization of donated items.
  • Work with management to ensure animals coming from other locations have available prepped space and ensures required paperwork is processed.
  • Ensure daily enrichment activities are being completed as required and report status to Manager as required.
  • Observe animals for signs of illness or injury and reports these to management.
  • Assist with the scheduling of staff, assignments and training new staff and volunteers.
  • Perform and assist with basic operational activities such as opening and closing duties, and operational flow processes including addressing daily staff work issues as needed and report to the shelter management as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Related & Essential Qualifications:

  • Experience working with animals in a sheltering or commercial environment is desirable.
  • Experience with proper cleaning and sanitary methods in a sheltering environment.
  • Experience working in an office i.e. processing paperwork, data entry, email, and phones.
  • Must be able to work comfortably and safely with all types of animals.
  • Ability to work well and communicate effectively with the public, fellow employees and volunteers.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and show maturity and good judgment.

Knowledge of:

  • Various breeds of dogs, cats and other domestic animals.
  • Various kinds of animal behavior.
  • Basic domestic animal care and safe, humane animal handling.

Physical demands:

  • Requires the ability to stand, walk, run, sit and kneel, crouch or crawl and climb different levels of height.
  • Perform work, which involves frequent lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 25 lb., and occasionally lift, push and/or move up to 75 lb. or more. The employee will also be required to lift and carry equipment and disabled animals, at times for long distances.
  • While performing this job the employee is regularly required to use hands & fingers; handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk and listen.
  • Work with and restrain animals of all sizes. Handle livestock and pet animals caught in disaster situations such as fires, floods and earthquakes.

  • The noise level in performing this job varies depending on the task being performed.
