The Department of Mental Health - Metro Boston Mental Health Units (MBMHU) of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital are seeking a motivated and committed Registered Nurse for the role of the Assistant Director of Nurses (ADON)/RN VI. This position Reports to the MBMHU Chief Operating Officer and the Director of Nursing and is responsible for activities at MBMHU of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (MBMHU) that support the Mission, Vision, Goals and Values of the organization and promotes high quality patient care and services. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the Director of Nursing in formulating and translating the objectives, goals, policies and procedures through the Department of Nursing. The selected applicant will be responsible for functions within the Nursing Department, including Performance Improvement, continuous Joint Commission readiness, quality control, incident reviews, administrative supervision, and investigations.

This ADON will act as a nursing liaison between Metro Boston Mental Health Units of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (MBMHU) and Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) for Performance Improvement, Joint Commission readiness activities of the inpatient units, and education. Acts in the interest of patients, by supervising and coordinating activities related to the ongoing delivery of nursing care and represents the interests of the Department of Nursing. Provides supervision and oversight for the administrative and clinical function of the Nursing Supervisor’s office, Staff Education Department, and the Staffing & Scheduling Coordinator. Represents the Nursing Department on committees, task forces, advisory groups within DMH and externally. Additionally, maintains familiarity with all applicable DMH and Joint Commission standards, and with changes in those standards; takes responsibility for educating MBMHU staff about applicable standards; establishes mechanisms to assess and document the facility’s level of compliance with applicable standards; and establishes mechanisms to correct areas of non-compliance with applicable standards.

Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm with Saturday and Sunday off; occasional weekend or Holiday coverage as needed in Nursing Supervisor’s office.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Collaborates with the MBMHU Chief Operating Officer and the Director of Nursing to establish objectives and principles of psychiatric rehabilitation for the Nursing Department. Provides guidance for the ongoing growth and maintenance of the functioning of the Nursing Department.
  • Encourages teamwork and productivity by following established procedure, supervisory techniques and good verbal and written communication to ensure the proper functioning of the nursing department, and facilitates teamwork between Nursing Department management and staff.
  • Oversees the hiring process of all MBMHU staff. Interviews and counsels prospective employees by following established guidelines to promote the highest quality care giver possible.
  • Serves on vital task forces and committees in order to integrate high quality and safe care between the Medical/Surgical and Psychiatry Departments. Practice and promotes the interdisciplinary process with other staff by participating and communicating in formal meetings and casual discussions to ensure the facilitation of therapeutic patient service delivery.
  • Utilizes current Performance Improvement principles in developing projects and programs consistent with MBMHU’s mission, vision, goals and values. Serves as an organizational role model for the “culture of quality” by creating an environment in which all MBMHU employees work together in a team effort to develop PI projects.
  • Provides leadership to MBMHU Leadership and Clinical Staff in establishing PI Plans, including appropriate measures and processes to audit and analyze outcomes. Serves as an educator for leaders, clinicians and staff members on performance improvement project design, methodology, and tools and data analysis.
  • Assists all MBMHU units in designing, reporting and evaluating the PI activities and in applying current Performance Improvement Models to unit-based projects. Continues and expands the process of unit-based assessment of Restraint and Seclusion data and initiates PI projects based upon the interpretation of the accumulated data.
  • Assures that performance improvement programs and resulting clinical practices are evidence-based by promoting the development and utilization of benchmarks for best practice comparison and project implementation. Monitors and investigates indicators used by MBMHU personnel for variation, taking appropriate action as necessary.
  • Strives for continuous professional development in maintaining and increasing knowledge and skills related to performance improvement methodology, Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements, as well as oral, written and electronic presentation skills, and group process utilizing current Performance Improvement principles in developing projects and programs consistent with MBMHU’s mission, vision, goals and values.
  • Serves as an organizational role model for the “culture of quality” and a clinical consultative resource to staff at all levels by creating an environment in which all MBMHU employees work together in a team effort to develop PI projects.
  • Maintains and communicates to all staff a thorough knowledge of DMH, DPH, CMS and Joint Commission standards. Assures that Joint Commission guidelines are met and units are up-to-date on changes as they occur.
  • Provides supervision to Staff Educators and Nursing Supervisors on all shifts and designated areas. Is sensitive to the needs of a multicultural, racially diverse staff and fosters the richness that this mix brings to the organization and to the Department of Nursing.
  • Oversees Compassionate Care Program in conjunction with MHWs, and key stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and ability to apply skilled management and leadership skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff and other disciplines and to write accurate reports.
  • Ability to motivate staff and to maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations.
  • Knowledge and ability to initiate and direct quality assurance programs in accordance with Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) standards for accreditation.
  • Power to direct interventions appropriate to special client groups such as mentally, physically and/or emotionally handicapped.
  • Ability to gather information through observation, application of interviewing techniques and examination of records and documents.
  • The ability to function independently.
  • Knowledge and ability to explain laws, rules and regulations, policies and procedures and guidelines governing agency operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the methods used to evaluate nursing practice.
  • Understanding of the principles and practices of health care administration.
  • Comprehension of cultural diversity includes the ability to interact positively with individuals from various social, ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Hospital Mission:

We take pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings. The DMH units within the Hospital provide inpatient psychiatric services to adults with serious mental illness with the goal of enhancing autonomy, safety and return to the community.
Patients are treated by a multidisciplinary team, led by attending psychiatrists which also includes psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, mental health workers, occupational therapists and rehabilitative staff specializing in vocational, recreational, and expressive therapies. A variety of treatment modalities are used, including psychopharmacologic, psychotherapeutic (individual, group, and family), psycho-educational, behavioral, cognitive and milieu therapies.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
1. A Graduate degree with a major in nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.
  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
