Summary:
The Literacy Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the educational development of children in kindergarten through 12th grade at the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County. This position collaborates with other key programming team members and community partners to coordinate and facilitate engaging literacy lessons and activities that promote literacy skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. The Literacy Coordinator helps create a positive and inclusive learning environment while fostering a love for literacy among Club members. The ideal candidate is passionate about education, possesses strong organizational and collaborative skills, and has a background in literacy or education.
BGCSJC serves 3,00 children ages five to 18 at 30 sites throughout North Central Indiana through summer and before and after-care programming, with a strong focus on social and emotional learning, college and workforce readiness, and academic enrichment to ensure every child has a chance to meet his or her potential.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Major responsibilities include:
  • Assist in the development of literacy lessons and activities for Club members.
  • Oversee and implement organizational literacy initiatives, such as the Beable Life-Ready Platform.
  • Maintain inventory of laptops utilized for literacy programming.
  • Design and implement age-appropriate literacy activities aligned with the Club's curriculum goals, promoting literacy concepts, skills, and problem-solving strategies.
  • Coordinate schedules and logistics for literacy lessons, ensuring the availability of necessary materials, resources, and volunteer support.
  • Provide on-site coaching and observations across Club sites.
  • Facilitate literacy lessons and activities for Club members, utilizing engaging and interactive teaching techniques to foster interest and comprehension.
  • Adapt literacy lessons to meet the diverse learning needs and skill levels of Club members in kindergarten through 6th grade.
  • Collaborate with Club staff to integrate literacy lessons into the broader Club programming, ensuring continuity and reinforcement of literacy skills.
  • Develop and maintain a collection of literacy-related resources, materials, and games for Club members to use during literacy activities.
  • Monitor and assess the progress and engagement of Club members during literacy lessons, providing individualized support and encouragement as needed.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where Club members and staff feel comfortable and motivated to participate in literacy activities.
  • Collaborate with Club staff to recognize and celebrate Club members' achievements and progress in literacy.
  • Maintain accurate records of literacy lesson plans, attendance, and participant progress. Prepare reports as needed to track outcomes and impact.
  • During club hours, be present and engaged with club members and staff
  • Stay up to date with current literacy education trends, resources, and teaching methodologies. Seek professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Comply with all safety and security procedures to ensure a safe and secure environment for Club members.
  • Model all BGCSJC and school corporation policies and procedures.
  • Create a healthy, positive, and engaging environment for all Club members and staff.
  • Assist with corrective action plans for any person or site not meeting BGCSJ standards.
  • Communicate concerns to appropriate people, such as principals and BGCSJC leadership
  • Assist with grant writing requirements.
  • Provide materials and training to Club staff and volunteers.
  • Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and training workshops, including leading relevant sessions with Club staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in literacy, education, or a related field. A teaching certification is a plus.
  • Previous experience in coordinating and facilitating educational programs, preferably in a youth-focused or nonprofit setting.
  • Strong knowledge of literacy concepts, curriculum standards, and instructional strategies for children in kindergarten through 6th grade.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate children.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset, with the ability to work effectively with community partners, volunteers, and Club staff.
  • Organizational and time management skills to coordinate multiple activities and ensure smooth program implementation.
  • Ability to adapt lesson plans and teaching methods to meet the diverse learning needs of Club members.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Experience in utilizing technology and educational resources to enhance literacy learning is desirable.
  • Familiarity with the mission and values of Boys & Girls Clubs of America is a plus.
  • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as needed for program implementation and special events.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and maintain a valid driver's license.
