Northern Neck Insurance is Hiring an Underwriter Near Irvington, VA

Summary

Reviews new automobile, homeowners, dwelling property & umbrella business to evaluate, classify, and rate each risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing. Utilize information from renewal component for policies requiring changes, endorsement processing and or possible non-renewal action. Provide support and guidance for designated agencies regarding exposure, criteria, coverage and rate questions via phone, email, or messaging within the system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examines application forms, inspection reports, insurance maps and past claims to determine degree of risk based on applicant financial history, loss experience, condition and maintenance of property, personal property, equipment and vehicles.
  • Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline risks.
  • Establishes tiers and limits of coverage.
  • Calculates standard rates and premium charges using system or manual rating when applicable.
  • Monitors the amount of insurance in force on single risk or group of closely related risks and evaluates possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance.
  • Consults with field representatives, agents or inspection companies to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain company underwriting policies.
  • Promote strong partnering relationships with agency personnel; develop territory intelligence for assigned agents and provide overall Personal Lines program support, assistance and training
  • Keep underwriting management informed of agency situations and competitive information.
  • Work with Underwriting Assistant to resolve technical issues and non-routine processing requests and/or inquiries.
  • Continued educational training on Personal Lines products and market trends.
  • Assists in training new Underwriting team members
  • Other duties as assigned. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.
  • All employees are expected to participate in catastrophic events.

Skills Required

  • Judgment and Decision Making – considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions
  • Critical Thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify strengths, weaknesses, alternative solutions or approaches to problems
  • Mathematics – the ability to understand and explain rating methodology
  • Reading and Comprehension – understanding written material in work related documents
  • Writing – communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the audience needs
  • Active Listening/Learning – listening for and understanding implications of new information for current and future decision making

Qualifications

Active Virginia Property and Casualty license. College degree or minimum three years of experience in insurance/customer service environment. Successful completion of Underwriting Training Program or equivalent. Must have excellent communication, telephone and customer service skills and the ability to work with limited supervision.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Core hours correspond to when the phone lines are available to our members. This position is located at our Irvington, VA office. The physical demands require the ability to sit, talk, see and hear and to be able to operate an automobile, telephone and computer keypad.
