Essential Functions:

• Oversees gate operations during both training hours and live racing.
• Ensures horses are safely and efficiently loaded into the starting gate.
• Starts each race once all entrants are safely loaded and standing attentively.
• Supervise gate schooling during the morning training hours and issue gate cards.
• Create a safe work environment by recommending and implementing safety measures.
• Evaluate standard protocols and make recommendations on how particular horses should load.
• Ensure accurate entry of notes into InCompass were pertinent details about horse’s gate behavior is stored.
• Review InCompass in advance to stay up to date on entrants who may exhibit difficult loading behavior or require special handling.
• Interact with racetrack personnel including but not limited to: Veterinarians, Trainers, Jockeys, Exercise Riders, and track management.
• Supervise the Assistant Starters.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from team members, regulatory agencies or members of the staff. Ability to write and present information to management in a reasonable manner. Ability to perform normal mathematical computations in regard to the implementation of current duties. Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several variables.

Licenses/Certificates: Must be 21 years or older. Must be able to obtain a Racing License from Louisiana Racing Commission.

The work environment consists of very non-demanding surroundings with a low noise level. Will occasional work in extreme heat or cold conditions.
