Supervises:Students
Assiststeacher and service providers by performing a variety of instructional supportduties to individual or small groups of preschool students encompassing a rangeof physical, developmental, intellectual, and communication disabilities;assists in the establishment and maintenance of appropriate classroom behavior;performs specialized language translation for students in the Special Educationprogram who may be deaf and/or hard of hearing, who utilize American SignLanguage (ASL) as the primary modality of communication; performs a routine ofclerical tasks as assigned.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
●Performs specialized dutiesrequiring the application of, and proficiency in, accepted and designated signlanguages and finger spelling.
●Utilize conversational ASL tocommunicate with students who are dear and/or hard of hearing.
●Provide group instruction asindicated by the classroom teacher, check and correct students' work while inprogress
●Provides individualizedinstruction based on student needs, keeping students engaged and on task.
●Implement the Teacher’slesson plans and maintaining daily classroom schedules
●Using a variety ofinstructional and assessment strategies, as directed by the Teacher, to meetindividual student needs
●Praise and reinforce theachievement of students, celebrate student success in all areas
●Assist with the dailycollection of student data related to attendance, academic progress, IEP goals,and behavior
●InstructionalPreparation/Support including, but not limited to: Preparing visual aids orcommunication supports, duplicating materials, laminating, reorganizingmaterials, distributing and collecting materials
●Assist as a substituteteacher as needed
●Assist with student hygieneand independent functioning needs including, but not limited to: toilettraining and toileting assistance, diapering, dressing, handwashing, feeding,and other self-help skills
●Supporting each child’ssocial, emotional and intellectual growth and development
●Ensuring the wellbeing andsafety of children at all times
●Assisting students withassignments or difficult concepts
●Maintaining communicationwith parents, staff and faculty regarding the progress of students
●Ability to observe studentbehavior, assess its appropriateness and apply the appropriate behaviormanagement technique, positive redirection, or corrective action as necessaryin order to support positive behavior choices.
Knowledge,Skills, Abilities:
●Modes of sign language,finger spelling, and gestures as required by assignment such as American SignLanguage (ASL)
●Working knowledge ofeffective methods of dealing with children
●Skill to make learningaids/assistive technology which will strengthen lesson plans
●Ability to follow minimallydetailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision;independently solve minor problems
●Ability to record and storedata accurately
●Excellent verbal and writtencommunication skills
●Proven organizational andtime management skills
●Ability to maintain aprofessional personal appearance, attitude and work behavior at all times
●Ability to work wellindependently and as part of a team
SuggestedTraining and Experience
●Graduation from high school.
●2 year degree from aCommunity College
●Incumbent must be proficientin American Sign Language (ASL)
●Clear level 2 criminalbackground screening.
●A valid Florida Driver'slicense and proof of insurance.
●Certification in CPR andFirst Aid, kept current. (will train, if needed)
