Software Engineer, Data & AI/ML

Location: San Francisco, CA (Remote/Hybrid available)

Our software platform, Aria, is the first to leverage AI to empower companies to understand, plan, and manage clean power. By enabling customers to save money and reduce their scope 2 emissions at the same time, Verse helps scale and accelerate corporate decarbonization.

The Role

You will drive the development and implementation of applications across a diverse range of data sources including analytics, text, time series, and images. A key function of this role will be driving the evolution of our Aria Assistant application and expanding the capabilities of our prediction and optimization experts. You will leverage cutting-edge technologies such as OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, and Meta's Llama to build solutions that enhance the capabilities of both our internal and external services. As an advanced technical leader in the Python ecosystem, teammates will look to you for best coding standards and conventions.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Implement, maintain, and promote best practices and hygiene in our Python code repository for others to follow and emulate

  • Collaborate with our optimization and analytics team members to write shared libraries, design and implement robust solutions intended for high performance with large datasets and complex computations

  • Ensure data quality and integrity throughout the data lifecycle

  • Integrate internal and external user applications with modern transformer-based AI services such as OpenAI’s GPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude

  • Work closely with platform and infrastructure engineers to build LLM-augmented developer productivity, observability, and anomaly detection tools

  • Occasionally also work alongside our platform, infrastructure, and data analytics engineers on various data pipelines to support our product and internal operations

Minimum Qualifications (Who are you?)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field

  • Strong programming experience in Python ( 5 years) and experience with libraries like NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, and Polars

  • Strong background in statistical analysis and computational mathematics

  • Intermediate understanding of modern AI/ML technologies and their application in commercial environments.

  • Proficiency in working with large datasets and data processing (streaming and batch) in both transactional and analytical settings

  • Familiarity with data warehouse and pipeline solutions for analytical workloads

  • Participate in code reviews, maintain technical documentation, and adhere to best software development practices

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a flair for creativity and innovation in software engineering

Preferred Qualifications (Ideal candidate)

  • Master’s degree or PhD in a related field

  • Senior or Staff level software development talent and up

  • Familiarity with the gRPC Protocol Buffer ecosystem (we use Buf’s Connect SDK)

  • Experience with fine-tuning foundation models

  • Intermediate experience in developing and deploying AI/ML models, particularly with frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar

  • Practical knowledge of model inference and training

  • Proficiency working with Natural Language Processing libraries like spaCy, NLTK, Scikit-learn, Polyglot, etc

  • Understanding of application specific architectures such as CUDA, GPUs, and TPUs

  • Knowledge of cloud platforms and services, particularly those related to AI/ML deployments.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading projects or initiatives within data science or AI domains.

  • Hands on experience deploying and maintaining one or more data pipeline, warehouse, and analytical solutions such as Hadoop, Spark, Airflow, DBT, Dagster, Presto/Trino, AlloyDB, Postgres, BigTable, Snowflake, Hive, RedShift, S3, GCS, etc.
