Marshall School of Business is Hiring a Content Developer, Social & Digital Media Near Los Angeles, CA

USC Marshall School of Business is seeking a Content Developer, Social & Digital Media to join the Office of Marketing and Communications. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Content Developer will strategically plan, develop, and implement engaging social media content to support the school’s mission. This position is located on USC’s main campus and has a hybrid work schedule with 3-4 days per week on site, specifically to cover student life, events, and more.

The ideal candidate will have experience in communications, social media, digital content creation, metrics & analysis, best practices, and industry standards to enhance the quality and impact of Marshall’s social media channels.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Planning, creation, timely distribution of content across all social media platforms

    • Ensure timely, high-quality creation and posting of content across all platforms

    • Active monitoring and community management of school social media channels to track engagement, DMs, positive/negative comments, and flagging potential issues

    • Timely, professional responses to DMs, emails, etc.

    • Maintain and update social media guidelines, processes and plans, best practices

    • Ensure compliance with USC guidelines and ethics for content generation and distribution

  • Metrics Analysis

    • Tracking and reporting of key social media KPIs

    • Analysis to optimize content and engagement

  • Project management

    • Working with agency and student workers for scheduling, quality control, and timely responses

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

    • Writing short, compelling social media captions, in addition to long-form articles and profiles

    • Report outs as subject matter expert on social media

    • Following USC Guidelines for style and AP style as well as Marshall Brand Guidelines

    • Able to brainstorm and evaluate ideas collaboratively

  • Collaboration and communication

    • Regular communication and collaboration with faculty, students, staff, departments/programs, USC partner schools, agency partners, vendors, and community to discover original content and build trust and relationships

    • Active participation in weekly team meetings, brainstorms, USC social media council meetings, communication councils, and other meetings as needed

    • Working with programs to share best practices with registered student organizations for their contributions to social media

  • Creative Tools and Skills

    • Deep familiarity with social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Vimeo, LinkedIn) and other emerging social platforms as well as developer tools for editing and creating content for those channels

    • Capturing photos and short videos

    • Photo and video editing, graphics using Canva

    • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite is preferred

  • In-person presence

    • Generally, 3 days on campus/on site to capture in-person events, activities, etc. in real time. (Note: There is flexibility as schedules and location can vary: Some events are early morning or evening. Busy event periods may require up to 5 days on campus at some points in the semester. However, summer months and exam periods are more quiet.)

  • Growth mindset and continuous improvement

    • Self-motivated to learn and understand complex research topics and distill into user-friendly sound bites

    • Current with social media trends, tools, platforms, news, etc.

    • Judgment and understanding of target audiences, market trends, academic and media landscape

    • Receptive and open to feedback for continuous improvement and to develop deeper awareness of academic working environment

    • Supports the Director of Communications and other team members as needed (e.g. additional coverage of events, upload/download media assets, content production days, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such as communications, journalism

  • Five years work experience in social media, communications, journalism, and/or PR

  • Familiarity with higher education and/or highly structured environments

  • Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and relationship-building abilities

  • Demonstrated project management, problem-solving and organizational skills, able to effectively manage priorities, deadlines and resources in a timely manner

  • Able to brainstorm and evaluate ideas collaboratively

  • Experience in social media and writing short compelling captions and longer format articles

  • Experience with visual storytelling, creating engaging digital content (photo and video), graphic design, photography

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and other creative software applications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

  • Minimum Experience: 3 years

  • Minimum Field of Expertise: Social media, communications, journalism, public relations, advertising or related field

Anticipated Hiring Range:

The hourly rate for this position is $36.34 - $46.06. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
