The City of Palm Springs is excited to announce the opportunity for the position of
Industrial Technician!
This position is a member of the Palm Springs International Airport and is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and servicing buildings, facilities, electrical equipment and systems, programmable logic controllers and peripheral devices, navigational equipment, baggage handling systems, and passenger boarding bridges; and performing a variety of technical and maintenance tasks relative to other assigned areas of responsibility.
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers and peripheral devices such as photo eyes, motor starters, relays, limit switches, proximity sensors, timers, solenoids, variable frequency drives, linear drives, and encoders.
  • Monitor, maintain, repair, and service baggage handling systems and passenger boarding bridges including adjusting tracking on conveyor belts, aligning pulleys, and replacing drives and motors.
  • Provide regular maintenance to drive motors; check and adjust amperage of motors and pumps to assure proper load settings; oil and repair motors; and clean motor pads.
  • Operate a variety of hand and motorized equipment and tools such as drills, saws, torches, testers, air lifts, platforms, and forklifts in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintain, repair, and service a variety of large and small equipment and appliances including generators, hydraulic trash compactors, automatic gates, and access doors.
  • Plan, direct and participate in preventative maintenance programs; perform visual inspections for maintenance and safety activities; and respond to building or equipment maintenance malfunctions.
  • Inspect and monitor job sites for properly completed work; diagnose more difficult maintenance problems and contact necessary personnel.
  • Participate in the construction, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and servicing of medium and low-voltage electrical, communications and electronics systems, including panel boards, communication systems, interior and exterior lighting systems, airport runway lighting systems, generators, electrical pumps and motors, HVAC equipment, electrical circuits, dampers and valves, and related systems, devices and equipment.
  • Meet with contractors at job sites to explain needed repairs; assist in repairs as necessary; inform supervisor of contract work performed.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Maintain a variety of records and logs; review and submit records and logs as required.
  • Perform general building maintenance (plumbing, framing, painting) as needed.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum requirements must be clearly demonstrated on the application to be considered, however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to compete further in the selection process. (One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full-time work. “Full-time work” means at least 36 hours of work over a period of one week or 1,872 hours of work over a period of at least 12 months.) Qualifications noted as “desirable” or “preferred” are not included as part of the minimum requirements.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible industrial maintenance and repair experience including electrical and HVAC experience is required.
  • Two (2) years of experience installing, programming, and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers and associated components is required.
  • Specialized experience or training in conveyor system repair or a related field is preferred.
  • Industrial maintenance and repair experience in an Aviation environment is preferred.
  • Installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) experience which includes components such as I/O boards, photo-eyes, encoders, and communications modules is highly preferred.
  • Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) experience is preferred.
Training:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent education is required.
License or Certificates:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver License with a satisfactory driving record (a driving record may be deemed unsatisfactory for any of the following reasons: three (3) or more moving violations or reportable accident within the last three (3) years; conviction of driving under the influence within the last five (5) years) is required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge, which is approved through the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is required.
Special Requirements:
  • Incumbent will be enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbents driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City.
  • Must be willing and able to work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation and a physical and drug screen.

This position works in a field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to heat, noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, electrical energy, high voltage; work or inspect in confined spaces, in or with water, at heights on scaffolding and ladders or with machinery; may be exposed to emergency situations and may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods; moderate to heavy lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, kneeling, bending, climbing with both legs and arms; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; communicate in person; driving a vehicle for extended periods.
