Job Title: Middle School ELA Teacher
Reports To: Building Administrator Building: Grandport Elementary Academy

Under the direction of the building principal works to create a flexible program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for upper elementary grade education, in accordance with each pupil's ability; to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.
Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Teaches reading and language arts to pupils in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction. ? Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss the pupil's progress and interpret the school program.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assess and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during assigned working day. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with district testing program. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs as required. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Reports issues to authorities as necessary, animal control, suspicious activity etc.
2. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES All students must be under supervision of certified personnel at all times. All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment at all times. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education: Must hold an undergraduate degree in Education; Master’s Degree preferred. Must hold a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education K-5, 6-8 all subject selfcontained.
  • Experience: Bachelor’s degree in education and at least two years of successful teaching experience in the primary grades. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with all children and the public in a school setting. Student teaching also applies.
  • Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others’ ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit.
  • Verifiable ability to work with young children of varying levels of readiness. Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff or members of the community. Ability to draft simple correspondence and some routine reports. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Proficiency in the usage of database software, internet software, and email. Ability to proficiently use Google Docs. Ability to type accurately and proficiently.
  • Ability to appropriately communicate with students, school team members, parents, members of the community, partners and others including vendors, law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.
  • Must possess excellent assessment, case management, interpersonal and communication/listening skills. Possess the ability to effectively present information in front of groups and engage audiences.
  • Ability to interpret/communicate school attendance law and provide support resources for students and their families. Must maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA law.
  • Must be able to work with minimum daily supervision, while keeping administrator abreast of activities. Requires the ability to plan and prioritize work in order to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Must possess the ability to work with highly complex and confrontational/emotional situations in dealing with students and parents in a wide variety of settings. Possess the ability to problem solve, and make sound judgments and decisions in a timely manner.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and outside agencies. Possess the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret data.
  • Must have the ability to write correspondence, policies and procedures.
  • Must have the computer literacy skills to manage online referrals, maintain regular email communication, prepare routine reports, and keep accurate records.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Professional Certificate
  • No less than two years of primary teaching experience
  • A core belief that all students can learn PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s Degree in Education or related field
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field with some related experience providing services with school aged children; or equivalent of education and experience
  • Experience teaching primary grades
