Under the general direction of the Director and Manager of Events & Guest Services and Guest Services Supervisors and Show Lead, the Show Cast Member is responsible for engaging and entertaining zoo guests through live performances and interactive immersive experiences. Show Cast Members will be responsible for delivering engaging and memorable performances that transport guests into the world of performance and engage them in the same environment as the actors, allowing for a close and interactive experience through various roles including: Puppeteer, Ranger, biologist, and conservationist. They contribute to creating a memorable and educational immersive experience for guests while promoting the zoo's mission of conservation and wildlife awareness.
This is a Seasonal Position
  • Hours and days vary based on time of the year
  • Summer, Spring, Break and Holidays – The show cast operation will operate 7 days a week from 10:30 AM – 4 PM, however schedules may vary
  • Show for puppets and dinosaur is happening every day during the summer, holiday, spring break and only weekends during off peak season (typically between hours of 10:30 and 15:30, however schedule may vary).
  • Up to 25 hours per week
  • Wages: $16.00/hour 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following:
Immersive Cast Member 
· Puppeteer:
· Performs interactive puppet shows for zoo guests, engaging audiences of all ages.
· Ranger:
· Leads guided tours, scavenger hunts, and other interactive activities that promote discovery and exploration. 
· Biologist:
· Assumes the role of a field biologist at Field Outpost 1 as a researcher, explorer, and wildlife enthusiast. 
· Conservationist:
· Creates an entertaining and educational experience that aligns with the zoo’s conservation message.
· Conducts interpretive programs by interacting with guests in a dynamic and engaging manner, weaving storytelling elements into educational experiences. 
· Collaborates with the lead and fellow cast members to rehearse and perfect performances. Learns and memorizes scripts, songs, choreography, to deliver captivating and engaging shows and immersive experiences for guests.
· Embodies the assigned character or animal, portraying their traits, behaviors, and movements authentically. Uses physicality, expressions, and voice to bring the character to life and engage the audience.
  • Performs successfully on stage and/or on grounds for character connections and educational engagement programs.
  • Works closely with other immersive cast members and zoo staff, to coordinate smooth transitions, cues, and overall show operations. Fosters a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages creativity, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
· Ensures all costumes used are returned after shows/appearances. Inspects the condition of costumes upon return, and stores them in an orderly fashion, ready for the next show. 
· Responsible for inspecting the conditions of all props, costumes, and equipment daily, and reports maintenance needs through the appropriate channels of communication in a timely manner. 
  • Performs scheduled shows throughout the day, ensuring consistency and quality in each performance. Executes scripted lines, songs, and dances routines with enthusiasm and precision, adapting to the energy of the audience, following Zoo communication standards and exemplifying our Mission statement and core values.
  • Engages with zoo guests before, during, and after shows, to provide information about the animals, conservation efforts, and other educational content. Answers questions, encourages participation, and fosters a sense of wonder and excitement among guests.
  • Participates in ongoing training sessions to enhance performance skills, animal knowledge, and presentation techniques. Stays informed about the zoo's exhibits, conservation initiatives, and relevant wildlife topics, to effectively communicate with guests.
  • Responsible for finding immersive cast member replacements through WhenToWork trade board and notifying Guest Services Supervisors when unable to perform as scheduled with as much notice as possible.
Guest Relations
  • Provides exceptional customer service by assisting guests with inquiries, directions, and recommendations. Maintains a positive and approachable attitude, creating a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all visitors.
  • Greets every guest with a smile. 
  • Thanks visitors for supporting/visiting the Zoo.
  • Answers phone calls, voice mails, and e-mails promptly and professionally.
  • Maintains a clean neat appearance and adheres to the Zoo’s uniform dress code.
  • Takes responsibility to stay informed about happenings at the Zoo, through reading employee communications and attending meetings.
  • Adheres to the Zoo’s policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Policy Manual.
  • Applies and exemplifies “green” (sustainable) practices whenever possible.
  • Promotes and supports diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in all aspects of the role
  • Reflects the qualities outlined in the Guest Relations Statement, our Core Values, and the Employee Pledge Performs other duties as assigned
SECONDARY DUTIES:
· Participates in special team assignments as directed by Director and Manager of Events and Guest Services, Guest Service Supervisors, and Show Lead.
· Supports conservation, education, and special event programs. 
POSITION CRITERIA:

Education and Experience:
  • Previous experience in theater, music, dance, acting, performance, or similar roles is desirable.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Dramatic training a plus.
License, Certification, or Preferred Qualifications:
  • Valid CA Driver’s License with good driving record is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to memorize scripts, songs, choreography, and to improvise under pressure.
  • Excellent stage presence and the ability to connect with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to entertain, convey characters traits and express emotions in front of a diverse live audience.
  • Knowledge or interest in zoology, wildlife conservation, or environmental sciences is a plus.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to engage with guests of all ages.
  • Willingness to comply with safety guidelines and protocols, including working around animals.
  • A positive and professional attitude, with the ability to work effectively within a team. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, with ability to supervise others in a friendly and effective manner.
  • Excellent time management skills (must be prompt and on time) 
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Capacity to develop friendly and productive relationships at work with a focus on collaboration.
  • Ability to handle conflict effectively and constructively.
  • Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow teammates, volunteers, and our guests.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that will include some weekends, holidays, and when events are scheduled.
  • Ability to exercise safe work habits, with attention to detail, with a focus on safety.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
  • Physical ability to perform multiple shows daily.
  • Ability to access all areas of the facility.
  • Ability to perform on stage for up to 30 minutes at a time.
  • Ability to work near loud noises, around and in large crowds, and in tight and dark spaces, including in a large costume.
  • Ability to climb stairs up and down, manipulate props, and stand/walk for up to two continuous hours.
  • Ability to lift 15-30 pounds occasionally, in course of normal duties.
  • Ability to have continual use of manual dexterity with frequent use of bi-manual dexterity.
  • Ability to reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.
  • For Dinosaur and California Bear, performers must have the ability to carry 75 pounds for 20 minutes with the ability to perform inside a bulky costume for long periods of time.
  • Ability to manipulate props and puppets, and to move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 30 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to hear and respond to the audience
  • Ability to operate out-of-doors in all weather conditions.
