The Grand Valley's best Breakfast Party is hiring for a Barista position!

Our busy summer season is here, and we are setting records for sales (and for having fun while we work!)!

If you enjoy a fast paced workplace, with a happy crew taking care of long lines of adoring guests, working here could be your next career move! We are hiring for a barista positions. Shifts run from 5:15 - 12, 6:15 - 1, 8 am - 4 pm, 12 pm - 8 pm (we close at 3 pm, 7 pm on weekends). We are looking for part or full time, and while we can be flexible on scheduling, we do have a big menu. Some study will be required if you are looking for part time work. 

Job Description:

  • Baking off scones, breads, danish, and sweet rolls (baking experience a plus, but not required) at least one day a week
  • Setting up the shop and taking care of early morning guests with speed and warmth
  • Closing the shop and restocking for the morning
  • Drinking mad amounts of beverages (work 4 shifts a week = free drinks all the time)
  • Cash register: making correct change, counting change back, helping sleepy people make the most of their days.
  • Charming fellow humans, upselling to delight our guests with a complete experience. 
  • Grill Cooking: breakfast burritos, panini, making salads and lunch wraps
  • Practicing task sequencing for swift, efficient use of time
  • Practicing ergonomics in the workplace for a life of freedom from repetitive work injury
  • Learning and executing many different, technical coffee and tea-based beverages
  • Clean. Polish. Wash dishes. Wash more dishes. Mop. Stock. Wash even more dishes. 
  • Tasting everything. Our menu takes chances, we evaluate what we serve all of the time
  • Room to rise: we have multiple interior positions for the right individuals
  • Fashion forward workplace: wear no uniform except a purple apron!
  • Customer base is wonderfully primed so our workdays are pleasant and sweet. Yes, there are techniques for this and we know how to teach them.

We find we have the most success with candidates who come from a multiple year employment period in the restaurant or retail industries. If you are new to the workforce, our Busser position is most likely the best place to begin. 

Compensation: Determined by Experience. Most of our crew averages $14-20/hour, tips included. 

Part Time Benefits:

  • Free personal coffee/beverages on shift
  • Work 4 days a week or more, free beverages on or off shift

  • 25% discount personal pastry orders 
  • Access to Off Season shifts (Nov-Feb)
  • Any bag of coffee beans for $8, per week (up to two)
  • Legal sick and quarantine pay, as required by state legislation, up to three weeks

Full Time Benefits (5 shifts/week is full time):

  • Free personal coffee/beverages on or off shift, 50% off coffee for a family member or friend (limit 2 per week)
  • Free meal during shift
  • 50% Employee discount on food orders off shift
  • 25% discount all pastry orders 
  • Primary Consideration Off Season shifts (Nov-Feb)
  • Any bag of coffee beans for $5, per week (up to two)
  • Ability to participate in Wholesale Programs. Able to order through Sysco, Sam’s Club or any wholesale vendor Octopus Coffee has an account with for cost 6%. Must pay when ordering, not when delivered. Coordinate with Inventory Controller.
  • Legal sick and quarantine pay, as required by state legislation, up to three weeks
  • Vacation Pay:
    • 12 months one week vacation, 25% pay (calculated on the average of the last three pay periods)
    • 24 months, one week vacation, 50% pay (calculated on the average of the last three pay periods)
    • 36 months, one week vacation, 75% pay (calculated on the average of the last three pay periods)
    • 48 months, one week vacation, 100% pay (calculated on the average of the last three pay periods)
    • For every 12 months after, 1 day of 100% paid vacation will add on to the week of paid vacation
    • Snooze and Lose Policy: As actually taking the vacation is the essential piece of why we have vacation pay at the Octopus, if you do not take your paid vacation, all benefits will be lost. Taking time off prevents burnout and thus keeps turnover expenses low as well as making life worth living. Please participate in Octopus Coffee’s goal of creating more quality of life by taking and enjoying your annual, paid vacations.
  •  Raises per 6 months worked successful performance review
