JOB DESCRIPTION

The School Nurse fulfills the mission of Christian Heritage Academy by overseeing and administering health services, policies and programs for the CHA community.

Summary/Objective

The School Nurse is responsible for working directly with the Associate Headmaster to provide medical care and oversight for the students and staff/faculty of Christian Heritage Academy. Spiritually, the employee shall possess characteristics that reflect: Acceptance without reservation of the Staff Member’s Covenant, Statement of Faith, and Statement of Marriage and Sexuality; have a strong, clear Christian testimony; a mature, godly spirit and be a person of faith and prayer. Personally, the employee’s life shall reflect: A lifestyle of biblical integrity; a spirit of dedication, commitment, flexibility; responsiveness, and the ability to listen and respond to counsel.

Essential Functions (Responsibilities and Tasks)

  • Train/maintain competency in the Magnus Health system

  • Contribute to the school system’s effectiveness by developing, implementing, and evaluating the school’s health plan and the plan of care for individual students

  • Maintains certification in Basic Life Support

  • Maintain organized safe and clean working environment

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops (when budget allows and is approved by the Headmaster and Business Director); reviewing professional publications from reputable sites; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional organizations. Obtain CEU’s as required by licensure requirements

  • Maintain confidentiality of health records of each student/staff/faculty

  • Adhere to all health and OSHA regulations pertaining to the distribution of all prescription and non-prescription medication and communicate any health concerns to parent(s) and/or school personnel. Administers medications according to established policies/procedures

  • Serve as a resource for health curriculum/health instruction and provides on-going health counseling

  • Educates or facilitates training/certifications of faculty/staff as needed on health-related topics (CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens, etc)

  • Plans and implements school health management protocols for children with special health needs, communicates plan to faculty and staff

  • Provides crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances. Notifies parent(s) of accident or illness and secures medical care for students in emergency cases (if parent(s) or emergency contact cannot be reached)

  • Assists in the control of communicable diseases through early detection, surveillance, and reporting with follow-up of communicable diseases

  • Reviews and evaluates immunization records for compliance with local, state, and national requirements

  • Initiates referrals to parent(s), school personnel and community health resources

  • Acts as a resource in promoting health careers and provides leadership and/or support for staff wellness programs

  • Serves as a liaison between the school and the health community

  • Establishes and implements effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Screen for health factors impacting education including vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.

  • Provides direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and establish health protocols

  • Serves as a health advocate for students

  • Compiles and maintains computerized reports, records, and documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on students

  • Orders equipment and supplies needed to maintain clinic inventory

  • Provide and maintain medication and first aid training for staff and ensure all skills are done properly according to guidelines. Training records must be on file.

  • Attends staff meetings, committee meetings, and all other meetings that are required.

  • Attends Professional Development training and devotions throughout the year

Supervisor Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Performance Standards

Completing tasks well and in a timely manner (before or at due date), while representing Christian Heritage Academy in a way that is glorifying to Christ.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, 10-month position with days off according to leave and school calendar from August-May. Any summer hours needed to prepare for the following school year would be paid on an hourly basis during the months of June and July.

Travel

No travel is expected for this position.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The school is currently a multi-level facility, which requires this position to navigate flights of stairs regularly to meet responsibilities as it relates to the school.

He/she must be able to regularly sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; frequent repetitive hand motions;

Prolonged use of computer may be necessary

Occasionally lift and/or move up to 10-40lbs.

This position is required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands; vision abilities include close vision and color vision.

Regularly works with frequent interruptions, maintains emotional control under stress. The noise level is usually moderate.

The employee may spend long hours in intense concentration which requires attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.

There are a number of deadlines associated with this position, which may cause significant stress.

The employee must deal with a wide variety of people on various issues.

Predictable and regular attendance is expected.

On occasion, he/she must be able to work longer hours than a typical day for events such as back to school dinner, parent-teacher conferences, meetings/functions in the evening.

Constant communication with Secretaries of whereabouts (if not in the nurse’s office) throughout the day is necessary due to the potential for emergencies.

Required Education

Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program and passing the NCLEX

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Three years of experience working as RN

  • BSN or equivalent

  • Experience in pediatric nursing/adolescent care or school health

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Current valid RN license from the Oklahoma Board of Nurse Examiners to practice professional nursing in the state of Oklahoma

  • AHA BLS CPR/AED certification
