**Position Overview:**
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Gopher Tortoise Monitor to join our team in Flagler County, Florida. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and surveying gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) in various habitats. This role requires compliance with specific permits and regulations issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
**Key Responsibilities:**

• Conduct field surveys to locate, identify, and monitor gopher tortoise populations.
• Document and report sightings, behaviors, burrow locations, and habitat conditions.
• Handle and relocate gopher tortoises as necessary, adhering to all legal and safety protocols.
• Ensure all activities comply with permits issued by the FWC for gopher tortoise monitoring and surveying.
• Work in collaboration with other wildlife professionals, land managers, and stakeholders to support conservation efforts.
• Educate the public and stakeholders about the importance of gopher tortoise conservation and habitat protection.
• Maintain detailed records of all monitoring activities and submit comprehensive reports as required.

**Qualifications:**

• Possession of all necessary permits from the FWC to monitor and survey gopher tortoises in Florida.
• Experience in herpetology, wildlife biology, ecology, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of gopher tortoise biology, behavior, and conservation.
• Excellent observational, data collection, and reporting skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with diverse groups, including the public, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
• Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to various field sites.

**Preferred Qualifications:**

• Advanced degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D.) in wildlife biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
• Previous experience in monitoring and surveying gopher tortoises.
• Familiarity with the local flora and fauna of Flagler County and surrounding regions.

**Work Environment:**

• The position involves extensive fieldwork, often in remote and challenging environments.
• Ability to work in various weather conditions, including heat and humidity.
• Physical stamina to walk long distances, carry equipment, and perform manual tasks.
