What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance - Custodian I position at YOUNG MENS CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF GREATER INDIANAPOLIS?
GENERAL FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position will be responsible for the cleanliness of the facilities and dining hall at Flat Rock River Camp.
KNOW HOW
- Must at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma, or its equivalent, and a minimum of 2 years experience in housekeeping and general maintenance.
- Should understand the importance of providing timely, quality member service, which includes ongoing evaluation of member satisfaction.
- Attend mandatory trainings such as New Employee Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention and Safety & Risk Management within 60-90 days of employment.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide inventory updates of janitorial supplies and equipment.
- Perform cleaning duties, such as shampooing rugs, washing walls, and removing rubbish.
- Assist with training and mentoring other Custodial staff.
- Assist with arrangement of furniture for banquets or social functions.
- Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors and recognizing possible hazardous conditions and taking steps to correct the problems.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to walk, stand, sit, tilt head, stretch, push/pull and/or lift objects, use all muscles and work in a kneeling or reaching position
- Ability to be in a crouching position and regularly twist body at the waist, shoulders or legs
- Ability to work in areas or on equipment that often creates conditions of dust and/or dampness
- Ability to work with chemicals, solvents, cleaners and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray and aerosol forms according to OSHA guidelines
- Ability to stand on ladders
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment.
- Ability to use close/color vision and to adjust focus
- Ability to work in a variety of environments (i.e. indoor, outdoor, warm, cold and noisy)
- Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.
- Physically and mentally able to administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
MEMBER INVOLVEMENT
- Be informed and up-to-date on the latest developments in your field.
- Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.
- Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
- Recommend participation in a variety of YMCA programs.
- Support our YMCA annual campaign, and invite members to participate.

- Provide an environment in which valuing diversity is encouraged and recognized.
