Job Description

Guided by the mission of the YMCA, the District Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operational success of two assigned YMCA family center locations. The incumbent provides strategic direction for both centers, ensuring alignment with and support of the Association's mission, strategic priorities, goals, and objectives.

This leadership role is accomplished through the effective development and supervision of staff, volunteers, and advisory boards; fostering strong community relationships and strategic partnerships; ensuring sound fiscal management; driving membership growth and program excellence; and leading financial development efforts to sustain and expand the YMCA's impact. The District Executive Director creates a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation while ensuring that both family centers deliver high-quality programs, services, and member experiences that strengthen individuals, families, and communities.

Duties And Responsibilities

Core Functions:

  • Customer Service Excellence – Provide excellent customer service and positive communication to all customers (members, participants, guests, volunteers, and fellow employees) by actively listening first, building relationships through understanding goals and interests, and responding to their needs in a safe and effective manner.
  • Role Modeling – Model and encourage the development and practice of the YMCA character values (Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility) and Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA), performing all assigned duties with energy and enthusiasm. Abide by all personnel policies and guidelines, follow all reasonable directives issued by leadership, and uphold rules, regulations and safety standards associated with the YMCA.
  • Annual Support Campaign – Provide leadership and support for the annual campaign and other special events when possible and as directed.
  • Risk Management – Remain familiar with risk management procedures in the YMCA facility and outdoor program areas, which include but are not limited to: swimming pool rules and procedures, current required certifications, child abuse prevention, and understanding specific responsibilities during fire, hurricane, tornado, or other emergency situations.
  • Board and Governance Support
  • Collaborate with boards, advisory committees, or governing bodies.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and recommendations for leadership and stakeholders.
  • Support governance activities and strategic decision-making processes.

Job-Specific Functions:

  • Leads and manages the entire operation of assigned YMCA family centers, including membership; programs (health and wellness, childcare, sports, aquatics); facilities; volunteer, staff and board development; financial development; community relations and collaborations with community agencies, businesses and government entities; and fiscal and budget management. Provides leadership to the family center teams and boards in establishing and implementing the strategy, goals and objectives for the branches, in harmony with and support of association goals.
  • Ensures high quality member services and programs and strategizes for innovative programs and activities.
  • Works closely with the branches’ representatives on each innovation team to ensure membership and program integrity, growth and development. This may include but not be limited to special events, member appreciation, membership and other promotional campaigns, customer service excellence, and full knowledge and use of Daxko Operations and Daxko Engage tools and resources.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff and volunteer performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and volunteers and achieve goals.
  • Develops, monitors, manages and directs assigned family centers’ budgets to meet or exceed targeted goals. Analyzes budget data and trends and makes informed decisions regarding operational changes as needed in order to maintain financial stewardship.
  • Assists in the marketing and promotion of the Y and its membership and program strategies.
  • Ensures the maintenance of the family centers’ facilities and properties to assure high standards of safety and cleanliness and to assure that the requirements of regulatory codes are fully met.
  • Serves on the Corporate Leadership Team and actively leads and participates in family center staff meetings and other related meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PREREQUISITES

Minimum Age: 21

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in human services, recreation, business or related field; Master’s Degree preferred

Certs/Licenses: CPR, First Aid, AED

Training: Y prerequisite courses: Child Abuse Prevention, Sexual Harassment, Blood-borne Pathogens

Experience: Minimum 6 years in management/leadership positions and supervising others (YMCA or other not-for-profit experience preferred)

Qualifications

Minimum Age: 21

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in human services, recreation, business or related field; Master’s Degree preferred

Certs/Licenses: CPR, First Aid, AED

Experience: Minimum 6 years in management/leadership positions and supervising others (YMCA or other not-for-profit experience preferred). Proven years of success in volunteer recruitment/training and Annual Campaign. Youth development and Program experience, along with Government Food Program.

Must complete a pre-hire criminal background check and drug screening.
