POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Sports Instructor is responsible for instructing a sport specific program that uses the YMCA’s Core Values (caring, honesty, respect and responsibility) as a basis to improve the skills and knowledge of participants in a safe environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Implement class plans that promote the curriculum associated with the appropriate sport. For a Level 3 Instructor - they will also create class plans.
- Level 1 - teaches general sports classes (ex. Short Sports, conditioning)
- Level 2 - teaches specific sports classes (ex. Soccer clinics, Basketball clinics)
- Level 3 - creates and teaches specific sports classes that might require a higher level of expertise (ex. private lessons, older age groups)
- Create and maintain a safe, healthy and positive educational environment which promotes respect and a motivated work ethic
- Positively and effectively communicate with both participants and parents/guardians
- Participate in continued instructor training
- Must attend all staff meetings, trainings and workshops
- Promote the growth of the sports program through networking with other YMCA departments, the Frederick sports community, and other identified organizations or individuals.
- Sign and follow the YMCA Code of Conduct at all times
- Act as an ambassador of the YMCA in the community at YMCA promoted events
- Oversee the development and safety of sports participants
- Other duties may be assigned
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Certifications: CPR/AED for adults, children, and infants. Within 3 months of hire.
- Ability to comprehend simple instructions, written correspondence; present information in an oral format; read and interpret documents such as policies and procedures; speak effectively in front of people
- At least 16 years of age (Level 1)
- At least 19 years of age (Level 2)
- At least 21 years if age (Level 3)
- At least 2 years JV/High School/Club travel experience within sports (Level 1)
- Previous playing (Varsity level or above), refereeing, or coaching experience of at least 2 years in a specific organized sport (Level 2)
- Advanced certifications for coaching – examples: USPTA, PPR, Grassroots Soccer, NFHS Coaching, etc. (Level 3)
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The applicant must have (1) the strength to lift 30 lbs on a regular basis, (2) the mobility to properly demonstrate technique, (3) safe range of motion, and (4) flexibility to support safe movement. The applicant will be instructing in a multi-purpose facility with various flooring conditions, shared equipment storage and placement and diverse programmatic needs. The sports department supports a nurturing, balanced approach to sport education with physical and emotional safety of our participants and instructors at the forefront of decision making at all times. Individuals must be able to work in moderate noise.
Salary : $15 - $25
