We are looking for a Staff Engineer/APM to provide essential engineering, project coordination, and technical support for the planning, design, and execution of electric distribution projects.
This role would support the Last Mile Program, this role will focus exclusively on distribution system upgrades that support grid reliability, EV infrastructure, substation modernization, and gas metering/regulating station improvements.
This mid-level position requires strong technical knowledge of electric utility systems; the ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, construction, and project management teams; and regular interaction with customers, consultants, and contractors. The Staff Engineer / APM performs work in both office and field environments and plays a key role in executing projects safely, on time, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Support
- Provide engineering support for the design, operation, and upgrade of the electric distribution system, including both utility-owned and customer-owned infrastructure.
- Perform engineering evaluations, load studies, system impact analyses, and economic assessments associated with customer service requests and system operations.
- Offer technical guidance to internal teams and external customers on service design, constructibility, and operational feasibility.
- Review distribution designs, material selections, and construction methods to ensure compliance with utility standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.
Project Planning, Budgeting & Controls
- Support the development, tracking, and execution of Division and Key Stakeholder Work Plans for capital and expense projects.
- Assist the Lead Supervisor and Project Management teams with project lifecycle activities: scoping, design, estimating, bidding, construction, and closeout.
- Participate in the bid cycle, including scope definition, coordination with Procurement and T&D Project Management, contractor engagement, and award recommendations.
- Contribute to annual budget development, cost forecasts, and variance analysis.
- Monitor project schedules, costs, and deliverables to ensure alignment with approved work plans and regulatory commitments.
Work Order, Design & Portfolio Oversight
- Review Work Orders prepared by Planners and Designers for technical accuracy, scope alignment, and budget compliance.
- Support execution of the Capital Work Plan portfolio, including:
- Major Capital Projects
- Public Works Projects
- System Conversions & Reinforcements
- Exit Feeder Projects
- Power Asset Management (PAM) Programs
- Other distribution infrastructure initiatives
- Provide technical support to internal groups and external partners working with PSE&G-owned and customer-owned equipment.
Leadership, Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement
- Support assigned Project Managers and perform project management tasks as delegated, including leading project meetings, status reporting, and schedule tracking.
- Demonstrate the ability to guide and coordinate work among engineering, operations, and construction teams.
- Help establish technical direction for assigned projects and contribute to organizational engineering initiatives.
- Participate in safety meetings, technical briefings, and other required stakeholder sessions.
- Maintain a customer-focused approach while ensuring system reliability, operational safety, and regulatory compliance.
Field Support & Storm Response
- Conduct field site visits to verify existing conditions, support construction activities, and resolve technical issues.
- Assist with storm restoration and emergency response, including off-hours work, extended shifts, and field operations as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (Electrical preferred).
- Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering and/or operations experience supporting electric distribution and/or transmission systems.
- Strong analytical, planning, and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ability to quickly learn new systems.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with various internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability, decision-making capability, and results-oriented mindset.
- Proven professionalism, leadership qualities, and customer service orientation.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license with a safe driving history.
- Ability to travel to meetings and field sites.
- Willingness to respond to storm/emergency conditions, including nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting a regulated electric utility in engineering, planning, or project management.
- Working knowledge of distribution automation, feeder analysis, substations, service design, and load forecasting.
- Experience with capital program management, public works coordination, or major infrastructure initiatives.
- Familiarity with utility asset management platforms, GIS systems, and project management tools.
