POSITION: Area Manager, Large DOT Projects
LOCATION: Orem, UT (based in office with regular travel to Utah job sites and occasional travel as needed)
Base Salary: $150,000 - $180,000 (Industry Leading Total Compensation Package)
JOB SUMMARY
The Area Manager, Large DOT Projects (most being Alternative Delivery and Joint Ventures) is a senior operations leader responsible for a portfolio of major DOT transportation projects, typically $100M each. This role provides direct leadership to about 3 Senior Project Managers/Project Managers, each running a single project or a segment, and is accountable for $150M to $250M in annual revenue across the area. Reporting to the Division Manager, this position owns the success of the area, including profitability, staffing, project execution, risk management, client satisfaction, and growth. The Area Manager is also expected to be a strong partner in Joint Ventures and Alternative Delivery work, helping align teams, maintain relationships, and position WW Clyde to win and deliver the next generation of large DOT projects. This role offers a clear path to Division Manager for a proven leader.
RESPONSIBILTIES
- Lead and support multiple large DOT projects through project teams, ensuring safe execution, strong quality, schedule performance, and cost control.
- Own area level performance and profitability, including forecasting accuracy, margin, cash flow, and risk exposure across the portfolio.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability to Project Managers, ensuring consistent standards, decision making, and follow through.
- Partner with the Division Manager to set area strategy, staffing plans, and performance expectations, then execute against those priorities.
- Serve as a key partner in Joint Ventures and Alternative Delivery projects by aligning roles, communication, governance, and shared expectations with partners and design teams.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with DOT leaders, owners, and key stakeholders, supporting issue resolution and long term trust.
- Support pursuits by helping identify upcoming opportunities, maintaining awareness of letting schedules and market priorities, and contributing to go or no go recommendations.
- Assist with pursuit strategy for Alternative Delivery work, including staffing plans, construction approach alignment, risk identification, and partner coordination.
- Oversee contract administration discipline across the area, including change management, documentation standards, and timely resolution of scope and cost impacts.
- Lead risk reviews and major project decisions, including procurement strategy, schedule recovery plans, claims avoidance, and critical field issues.
- Champion WW Clyde’s safety culture and ensure compliance with all safety and environmental requirements across the area.
- Ensure lessons learned and best practices are captured and implemented to strengthen performance across all projects.
- Maintain an insurable driving record.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred. Equivalent heavy civil leadership experience will be considered.
- Typically 12 years of heavy civil transportation construction experience, including significant DOT project leadership.
- Proven experience leading multiple large projects through other project leaders.
- Demonstrated success managing large, complex DOT projects, including Alternative Delivery work such as Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build, CMGC, or CMAR.
- Strong financial and operational acumen, including forecasting, cost control, schedule oversight, and change management discipline.
- Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence across owners, partners, field leadership, and internal stakeholders.
- Track record of developing teams, setting expectations, and driving accountability without losing culture and trust.
- Ability to work from the Orem office and travel regularly to job sites as needed
