Wilmington College, a small private college in Wilmington, Ohio, is seeking a dynamic music educator to join a student-centered department for the position of Assistant Professor of Music.   This position is a full-time, 9-month position with a renewable contract with satisfactory annual evaluations. The appointment will begin August 2026.
 
 The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching undergraduate courses in a variety of music topics and an expertise in teaching piano and/or directing a choir. Additionally, this position will offer private piano and/or voice lessons to students for additional compensation.
 
 Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teaching face-to-face undergraduate courses in the Music Program, including Music in Human Society (Introduction to Music), Music Theory, and Music Topics courses in the professor’s area of expertise. This position will teach a 3/3 course load each semester (12 hours) on a 9-month contract paid out over 12 months. This position can be expected to be on campus 4-5 days a week.
    • If the candidate’s expertise is in piano, teaching courses in beginning and intermediate piano to students in the music minor and students in need of Fine Arts credit for general education.
    • If the candidate’s expertise is in choral conducting, directing the Wilmington College choir comprised of students, faculty, and community members. The choir works with a diverse repertoire and participates in at least one music concert each semester.
  • Working one-on-one with students who sign up for private lessons in piano and/or voice each semester. 
  • Recruiting and retaining exceptional students for the music program and the college
  • Providing academic advising and career guidance to students. Keeping 5 hours each week for office hours and meeting with students.
  • Working in collaboration with other Fine Arts faculty, staff, and students in meeting the creative and curricular goals of the program.
  • Providing service to the College and Fine Arts Area, engaging in professional and college service activities including assigned committee work and departmental assessments. 
  • Connecting with music professionals in the region to strengthen relationships and assist students with networking.
  • Communicating in an effective and timely manner with students about their progress in the courses taught. Giving clear and constructive feedback in both formative and summative assessments.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Master’s degree is required, and a PhD or DMA are preferred.  However, individuals with documented tested knowledge in professional musicianship commensurate with advanced degrees in music will be considered.  
  • Proven experience (minimum of two (2) years) in teaching at the undergraduate collegiate level is required. 
  • Demonstrated history of positive professional collaboration with colleagues and students.
  • Ability to teach music topics courses in an area of expertise for students in the music minor and general education students. Knowledge of Music Technology is a plus.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Learning Management Systems like Blackboard, and Student Information Systems like Jenzabar.
