Assistant Director for Student Involvement

Williams College
Williamstown, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/9/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/7/2026
At Williams College, we work closely with students to bring the campus experience to life, and this role sits right at the heart of that work. As the Assistant Director for Student Involvement, you’ll partner directly with student leaders and organizations, advising on everything from events and finances to leadership development, safety, and campus-wide initiatives.

What makes this role especially exciting is the breadth of impact: you’ll help shape the student experience by supporting student government, guiding over 200 organizations, and leading key programs that foster inclusive, engaging, and meaningful involvement. We’re a highly collaborative team, and you’ll work across departments to ensure students have the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed.

If you’re passionate about student development, enjoy dynamic, relationship-driven work, and want to make a visible impact in a vibrant campus community, this is a place where your work truly matters.

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director for Student Involvement (ADSI) advises and supports student leaders, encouraging co-curricular learning & growth through student leadership experiences and helping students access campus resources to succeed in those efforts.

The ADSI advises student leaders, including but not limited to the registered student organization (RSO) system and student government, and works with them on:

  • managing operations & logistics,
  • overseeing financials and appropriate use of funds
  • creating, updating, and following group constitutions
  • preventing hazing
  • developing contracts
  • providing and participating in correlated training

The ADSI works closely with the Associate Director for Student Centers & Events (ADSCE) and the Student Involvement & Events Assistant (SIEA) on initiatives, especially on RSO-sponsored events and programs both small and large.

The ADSI collaborates with the Assistant Director for Residential Education (ADRE) on programmatic connections between RSOs, student government, and residential education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least one year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Master’s degree preferred. Recent grads with undergraduate student activities and/or RA experience will be considered.
  • Strong relationship management skills, a friendly and approachable demeanor, and the ability to calmly de-escalate difficult situations
  • Strong attention to detail & strong organization skills
  • The ability to work independently with self-motivation & flexibility while at the same time working positively & collaboratively as a member of a highly-developed, enthusiastic professional team
  • Knowledge of Google Suite; understanding of internet for marketing and website updating; ability to quickly learn additional specialized college software/databases, including Workday
  • Experience with student leadership development & team building and student club/organization advising/support
  • Content knowledge in student activities, residential life, or a related student affairs area; knowledge of college student development theory and practice is desirable
  • Commitment to supporting diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities; direct experience in DEI work is desirable
  • Student crisis response and support is desirable

The ADSI will occasionally be required to lift and set up items correlated to events/programs/meetings, including folding tables/chairs, linens, signage, etc. Some buildings are not fully wheelchair accessible.

This position requires the ability to interpret college policies and apply them to a wide range of situations involving Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), student government, and campus events. The Assistant Director must analyze organizational requests, assess potential risk, and determine appropriate guidance related to financial processes, event planning, hazing prevention, accessibility, and institutional compliance.

The role frequently involves responding to changing circumstances and advising student leaders who may have limited experience managing organizations or large programs. The position must evaluate complex situations involving multiple stakeholders and balance student development goals with institutional policies and safety considerations.

In addition, the position manages multiple concurrent processes—including RSO registration, training programs, campus-wide events, and student government support—requiring prioritization, problem solving, and coordination across several departments. While some responsibilities follow established procedures, many situations require adapting those procedures or developing solutions to address unique organizational or operational challenges.

Williams College is committed to building a broadly diverse and inclusive community where members from all backgrounds can live, learn, and thrive.
