MACHINE OPERATOR
Machine: HEADSAW MCDONOUGH BAND HEADSAW (LEWIS CONTROLS)
Summary
Operate the headsaw to break down logs safely, efficiently, and for maximum value recovery.
Responsibilities
- Run headsaw using Lewis Controls; adjust patterns, thickness, and sequence based on log shape, defects, and species.
- Maintain proper cutting: tracking, tension, feed speed, and log presentation (dogging, squaring, rotation).
- Make cutting decisions to maximize value recovery—not just production speed.
- Monitor saw performance (sound, vibration, cut quality) and respond quickly.
- Coordinate with foreman and crew to maintain steady production flow.
- Help train and support crew in the headsaw area.
- Assist with saw changes, basic maintenance, and keep equipment and work area clean, safe, and in working condition.
- Record production and downtime as required.
Safety
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures.
- Stay alert to log movement, stress, and pinch points.
- Communicate clearly with crew at all times.
Skills
- Headsaw or similar experience required.
- Understanding of log breakdown, species, and defects.
- Mechanical awareness (tracking, heat, vibration).
- Able to make quick, accurate decisions under production pressure.
Performance
- Hit production targets (MBF/hour).
- Hold thickness within tolerance.
- Maximize grade/value recovery.
- Minimize downtime and errors.
- Operate safely and communicate early.
Pay: $24.00 - $28.00 per hour
