Job Summary

Job Description Summary

The Landscape Worker cares for the exterior appearance of institutional buildings, lawns, plantings, and grounds surrounding the campus. This position utilized and maintains hand tools, landscape equipment, riding equipment, and chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, weed killer, gasoline, etc.). This position requires snow removal and may assist with trash removal, and other trades as requested. This position requires the use of landscape construction and maintenance equipment on steep slopes and in close proximity to students, faculty, staff, and buildings on-campus. This position requires the employee to occasionally work outside of their standard work schedule. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Grounds.

Medical Monitoring

This position requires the incumbent to participate in the Medical Monitoring program at no cost to the employee.

Position

This is a full-time, non-classified position; it is non-exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime. The scheduled shift of the position is 7:00am - 3:30pm, but not all activities of this position occur within the confines of this schedule and may require evening and weekend scheduling as needed.

The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and the institution. The base salary of the position is $16.50/hour ($32,175 annually) with excellent state benefits. This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM.

As a professional within the Institution Facilities department, this position will play a key role in ensuring WVSOM's facilities remain safe and accessible. This position requires on-call availability to respond to occasional emergency needs involving campus grounds and other essential trades, including campus snow removal.

This position requires possession of a valid/current driver's license.

Skills Required

Education and Experience

This position requires a high school diploma or G.E.D., plus one to two (1-2) years of recent and directly related experience. This position also requires the employee to have a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Position requires excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex grounds-keeping procedures, labor and custodial methods, procedures, and safety principles.
  • Knowledge of the cultural requirements for mulch, groundcovers, shrubs, ornamental flowers, trees, turf, and bulbs.
  • Must be familiar with landscape chemicals including pesticides, fertilizers, weed killer, mixing of chemicals required for landscape equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate a bucket truck and perform work at elevated heights in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Requires basic mathematical calculations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate all related labor supporting equipment, all grounds-keeping equipment and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and comprehend information necessary to effectively follow oral and written instructions.
  • Duties involve long periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, and lifting heavy items weighing approximately 50-75 pounds.
  • Demonstrates general computer skills, including proficiency with common WVSOM software applications, email systems (i.e. Outlook), and basic data entry.
  • Requires frequent and prolonged exposure to extreme variations in temperatures including outdoor weather conditions and exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals.

  • Maintains and cares for campus grounds: mows, seeds, trims, edges around trees and bushes, removes yard waste, snow removal, operates a back-hoe, riding lawn mowers, forklifts, and chain saws.
  • Operates, services, and maintains power tools and equipment, such as weed eaters, lawn mowers, rototillers, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, small seeder, sod cutters, walk-behind sweepers, vacs, etc.
  • Operates, services, and maintains all grounds maintenance equipment, such as trucks, tractors, riding mowers, snow removal equipment, end loaders, tilt bed trucks and steep slope mowing equipment.
  • Assists with landscape construction as needed.
  • Assist during special events (i.e. Graduation, White Coat Ceremony, etc.) and help other trades as assigned or requested.
  • Performs general tree maintenance as required and assists in the planting, staking, and removal of trees as needed. Uses pruning saws, loppers, and chain saws in performing these duties.
  • Safely lift, carry, and transport office furniture, ensuring proper handling to prevent damage to items or facilities.
  • Disassemble and reassemble furniture as needed for relocation or installation.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or as directed.
